  • Spacious, well-kept bushveld site 10 minutes' drive from Lephalale
  • Open-sided wooden bar with views over the Mogol river
  • Two swimming pools, baby pool, volleyball court and putting course
Wow, what a watering hole… Molalatau Lodge and Campsite welcomes weary wanderers to rest and refresh at the meeting point of the Mogol and Rietspruit rivers, just off the R510 and 10 minutes’ drive from Lephalale. The backdrop here is a mighty scenic one, with the Waterberg Mountains looming behind the surrounding bush. Native trees all around the seven-hectare Limpopo site cast plenty of shade for a bit of respite from the sun, and provide nesting space for lots of chatty birds (it’s certainly worth bringing your binoculars along for this one). It’s far from wilderness on site, though – this pretty park is all well-kept gardens and smart lawns, with plenty to keep guests entertained. Two outdoor pools and a baby pool take care of those who need a refreshing swim, and there are pool tables, a putting course and a volleyball court for those who fancy a game or two. Time for eats, and you’re welcome to stoke up your own braai here (no South African trip is complete without one), or scoot over to the a la carte restaurant for a menu of tasty treats. If it’s a thirst you’ve worked up, pull up a chair at the open-air wooden bar for cool drinks and gorgeous views over the river. It’s also the prime place to be on rugby days, when the big screen bursts to life and you’re welcome to cheer on any team you like (as long as the Bokke win in the end, of course…)

Local attractions

Molalatau means 'the resting place of the lion', but if there aren't any lounging on site, make your way to Marakele National Park (45 minutes’ drive) for game drives or walks in search of the big five, plus antelopes and an assortment of mischievous monkeys. Want to guarantee that big cat sighting? Head to Mama Tau White Lions Breeding Project (20 minutes away) to see the rare beasts. Folks who like to fish may like to try their luck casting around for bass in the waters by Mokolo Dam (40 minutes); a braai area awaits if you’ve been successful (or want to go straight to the steaks). For something a little more adventurous, ride the zipline over the bush canopy at Lekhalo Safaris (an hour’s drive). Should you fancy stretching your legs, there are heaps of hiking trails in the Waterberg Mountains and the surrounding bush; there’s also an 18-hole golf course 15 minutes away in Lephalale and horse riding for all levels (including kids and baffled novices) at Ant’s Hill (55 minutes away).
