General

  • Woodland site a kilometre from Madalena beach
  • A 15-minute drive from Porto
  • Pool, playground, snack bar and tennis courts

If you're off to the Porto District, you must of course partake of the port. It's all easily done from Parque Orbitur Madalena, five kilometres from the historic town of Vila Nova De Gaia and the famed port caves of Taylor’s Port and Porto Calem. The esteemed old city of Porto, home to heaps more port-based shenanigans, is a 15-minute drive away across the Duoro river.

And would you care for a beach with your port? Parque Orbitur Madalena is a kilometre from the sands at Madalena, one of the region's award-winning beaches stretching along 17 kilometres of coastline: Aguda, Canidelo, Francelos, Granja, Miramar and Valadares are all a cinch to get to from here.

Parque Orbitur Madalena is a roomy woodland site, with plenty of space for play and sunbathing. It has an outdoor pool with sun loungers and a snack bar alongside, tennis courts, a play area and free wifi.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The restaurant is open between 01/06 and 15/09.

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/07 and 01/09.

The grocery shop is open between 01/06 and 15/09.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

  • Liked:

    - very good location for both the beach (10 min walk) and Porto (45 min bus ride at 2 euro each)
    - Huge area to choose your pitch - no actual set pitches but enough space for everyone not to be on top of each other and it’s all under forest canvas
    - good pool - but does play load music all day so not for you if you want to snooze
    - toilets and showers clean enough

    Disliked:

    - whole site is very tired and scruffy - the facilities are kept clean but are not inviting
    - looks like an ex army barracks - very grey and a lot of concrete
    - reception staff very grumpy and you seemed to always be an inconvenience when asking questions - a smile costs nothing!
    - lots of large groups of children who take over the whole pool area in the afternoons
    - only 10 sun beds - good luck getting one of those!

Easy access to bus service into Porto
Lovely beach just 5 mins away
Handy shop on site. There was a bar and restaurant but we didn’t use them
Good site pool (although not open whilst we were there)
Large supermarket with a few minutes drive (turn left out of the site, first left, through lights, straight over next 2 roundabouts)

    Disliked:

The general condition of the park was poor and felt quite neglected. Ok so you’re under a canopy of trees but tree debris should be cleared up as it’s a trip hazard, dustbins had lids hanging off and we’re old and rusty, the shower facilities are dated (looked at least 20-30 years old), needed painting, hot water was unpredictable, showers are cramped, one toilet roll holder by the door, some toilet doors were warped and wouldn't close, other doors didn’t have locks. All of the washing machines on the site were out of order for days. Reception staff were very apologetic but had no idea if or when they’d be fixed.

There were no set pitches so it was a free-for-all, which when busy could be a nightmare. We’ve stayed at other Orbitur parks and they’re not as neglected as this one.

From the manager...

Local attractions

Beaches and port are the main items on the agenda with a stay in these Portuguese parts, with proximity to award-winning sands as well as to Vila Nova de Gaia and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto, built on the hillsides overlooking the Douro river.

Madalena beach, the closest to the site, is a top spot for sunbathing as well as surfing. It has wide stretches of sand, dunes and wooden passageways to wander during the day, and lively restaurants and bars to keep you fed and occupied in the evenings. Aguda and Senhor da Pedra beaches are also top sandy picks around Gaia.

And then to town… have a day among the port caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, including those of Taylor’s Port and Porto Calem, then move on to Porto 10 kilometres away for more world-famed caves and a vast number of old buildings including the 14th-century Church of São Francisco, the neoclassical Stock Exchange and the Gothic-style Church of Santa Clara.
