All set to step onto the waves? Set forth for Sea Natives Surf Camp, a glamping site in the little resort of Praia da Tocha, where guests of all ages can get to grips with the skills needed to ride the Atlantic waves at the beach just up the road. Surf lessons (tailored for both kids and grownups) are an important part of the setup here, but they're far from the only activity available on site. Indeed this Cantanhede site is packed with things to do: sign up for yoga lessons (with instruction in English, French, German or Dutch to make sure everyone's getting the gist), get the nippers involved with kids' club activities, gather for the twice-weekly trips to a local restaurant or join outings to the fab city of Porto. A swimming pool and playground are also on hand for less formal antics. (Rather a bit of quiet time? There's a nanny on site that can keep an eye on the kids while you chill out with a massage at the wellness area.) Feel free to travel light when you're heading over here: the tipis are all set up with mattresses, bedding and lighting, and you'll have access to a well-equipped shared kitchen with a fridge, several hobs and plenty of cutlery and other kit. Bit too bushed for cooking? Stroll on over to the café-bar for your refreshments instead.

Local attractions

The fab surf waves aren't the only draw in Praia da Tocha – the long sandy stretch of beach is most excellent too, peppered with traditional fishermen's huts and backed by lovely dunes and forest to stroll through (keep an eye out for a little library on the beach too). Once you've mastered the art of getting up on your surfboard, take your skills south to Figueira da Foz (half an hour's drive) for a splashing day out on the sea. If you need a break from the action, perhaps you'd prefer a gentler dip in the natural outdoor pool at Olhos da Fervenca (20 minutes). Steer away from the seaside for a little while for a cultural day in Coimbra (45 minutes) – this handsome city was Portugal's medieval capital and makes for a splendid day of poking around in the cobbled streets of its historic centre. There's also a grand cathedral and a couple of museums to visit. Further afield, discover fab architecture in Fatima (an hour and 15 minutes) or take a hike from Porto de Mos (an hour and 10 minutes) into the rugged Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park.
