- Family-friendly site on the edge of a lake near Loenen aan de Vecht
- Half an hour's drive from Amsterdam and Utrecht for day trips
- Boat and canoe rentals, lake swimming and sandy beach on site
Folks of all ages seeking aquatic amusement on hols, consider a stay at Recreatiecentrum Mijnden in a splendidly green spot five minutes’ drive from the small town of Loenen aan de Vecht. Plonk the fam down here on the banks of the Drecht river and on the edge of the Loenderveense Plas lakes for hours (or days) of entertainment in the form of swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing.
And if you shun such levels of activity? A smashing sandy beach is on site for stretches of sunbathing, with a handy play area and trampoline close enough to keep an eye on as you recline. Also around the site are games of table tennis and pétanque and a sports ground where active kids can tear around with their new chums. Still not worn them out? In school hols they can join in with various organised activities on site – pick up a timetable at reception to see what’s on.
For eats, you can pick up essentials at the mini market and have bread delivered daily for a fab fresh brekkie. A bigger supermarket is in town – do as the locals do and pop down on a bike in about 10 minutes or so (hire bikes on site if you’ve not transported your own). Or if you can’t countenance cooking, you can pick up quick meals from the snack bar or settle in for something more leisurely at the site’s restaurant. Nab a table on the flower-filled outdoor terrace on warmer days or cosy up near the fireplace if you’re feeling a chill.
After days in, on or around the water, freshen up at the toilet blocks (which have been given thumbs-up from previous visitors for their cleanliness) and deal with any dirty togs at the launderette.
Should you be tempted to stray from your lakeside location, there are heaps of attractions to be explored nearby – the area is peppered with castles and the canals of Amsterdam are only about half an hour away.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

If you’d like to see a little more of the lakes, hire canoes or small boats to head off in search of hidden corners, or sign up for lessons at one of the sailing schools nearby (it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to bike over to the other side of the lake for the nearest). Adults and kids aged five and over can learn the basics over here.
Other recommended activities are the various paddleboarding offerings from Ik Sup, 15 minutes’ cycle away. Take lessons, join a tour to a local nature reserve or simply hire a board to paddle at your own pace. Special events including yoga and full-moon paddles are on the menu too.
You’ll no doubt be unsurprised to hear that cycling is a great way to get around this area. There are great swathes of woodland, fields and moors nearby for country trails, or you could cycle to one of the area’s castles. Moat-circled Nyenrode Castle (20 minutes), riverside Zuylen Castle (45 minutes) and medieval Muiderslot (an hour) are all good places to aim for. Sypesteyn Castle, half an hour away, is also worth a visit – particularly if you're interested in seeing its excellent porcelain collection.
For a bit of city culture, head north to Amsterdam or south to Utrecht – you can drive to either in about half an hour or hop on a train or bus to get there in an hour or so. In Amsterdam, take a canal boat tour, visit the Anne Frank House and peruse the paintings at the Rijksmuseum. Utrecht has more canals to wander about by, and a couple of pleasingly kid-friendly museums in the Railway Museum and the Speelklok Museum, filled with all sorts of fab self-playing musical instruments.
