  • Family-friendly site on the edge of Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park
  • Hellendoorn, Slagharen and Waarbeek theme parks within an hour
  • Two swimming pools, paddling pool, slide and play areas
Grab your helmet, get that bike serviced and climb in the saddle for a trip to Camping de Noetselerberg, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Nijverdal, a town in the East Netherlands region of Overijssel. Overijssel is a particularly scenic part of the Netherlands and you’ll be well placed for exploring it: you can walk straight into Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park from the site for hiking and biking routes (including the long-distance Pieterpad), and there are of course loads of cycle trails starting nearby that'll take you through the scenic areas around Nijverdal. On the days when you just want to chill at home base, there’s plenty to keep you and the kids entertained: for an active start to the day, sports fields and play areas are dotted throughout the site (one play area is even on a pirate ship), then you can all spend the afternoon getting your toes wet and fingers wrinkled at one of the two on-site pools (one outdoors, one with slide indoors). That’ll all get you needing some food in no time and luckily you won’t have to go far to satisfy your hunger. Wander over to the on-site bistro for food and drinks on the terrace, or make your way into town for a bite at one of the Nijverdal eateries. You can also fire up the barbecue and look after yourself if you’re craving something particular.

Local attractions

Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park is a paradise for outdoorsy types, but there’s more to it than just hiking and biking. History buffs should make tracks for the Holten Canadian War Cemetery, a World War II-era burial ground for casualties from the tail end of the war, and the Natuurmuseum Holterberg Diorama natural history museum in the south of the park (both around 20 minutes’ drive from home base). Those aren’t the only historical must-sees near Noetselerberg: this is a particularly castle-filled part of the Netherlands, and Twickel, Warmelo and Weldam are all within half an hour. Though they’re in private ownership and aren’t open to the public, they each have stunning gardens to traipse through, and act as a nice lead in to the fab de Wiersse Gardens, 45 minutes away. If the kids aren’t quite grabbed by parks and the past, give them a day (or two) of distraction at one of the nearby theme parks. The rides of Hellendoorn Adventure Park are less than 15 minutes away, and Waarbeek (half an hour) and Slagharen (45 minutes) are well worth the longer trips. Return to grownup territory at the Grolsch beer factory in Enschede or the Um d’n Olden Smid vineyard, or take a city day in Amsterdam, an hour and a half away.
