General

  • On a scenic terraced hill, 7km from Florence's historic centre
  • Within easy reach of the vineyards of the Chianti wine region
  • Pool, paddling pool, pizzeria and restaurant all on site

Doing Florence on a budget? Also rather hankering after some of those gorgeously green Tuscan scenes you may have seen in A Room With A View? Consider then a stay at a site with a view, aka the wallet-friendly and verily verdant Camping Village Internazionale Firenze.

From this super spot in the suburb of Bottai you’re but a mere seven kilometres from the centre of Florence, as handsome and historic a city as you could ever hope for. It’s splendidly easy to access thanks to the bus that’ll whisk you into the city centre in around half an hour from a stop just a few minutes’ walk from the site. Head in the other direction (again by bus if you like) to hit the hills of Chianti for days spent among the olive groves, vineyards, castles and medieval villages.

Wherever you choose to wander, upon returning to the site the swimming pool and paddling pool await for cooling dips (utter bliss on summer days when the city temperature wavers towards the sweltering end of the spectrum). The surrounding sun terrace is well-equipped with loungers for your post-swim floppage, there’s a handy bar for snacks and drinks, and a lifeguard keeps an eye on proceedings to ensure a safe space for everyone.

For spells when a digital fix is needed, the site’s wifi service is available around the bar and reception areas, and a TV room is at guests’ disposal for further spells of screen-based downtime.

You’ll no doubt be ravenous once refreshed from your day out, so you’ll be chuffed to learn that there’s no need to roam far to forage for your evening feast. The on-site restaurant-pizzeria Isola Verde serves up tasty Tuscan dishes and pizzas to eat in or take away, and there’s a mini market with various bits and bobs for those who prefer a DIY approach to their dinner – fresh bread, milk and veggies along with tiptop local olive oils and, of course, a splendid selection of vinos from the vineyards of Chianti. Cin cin!

Please note

Facilities/activities including launderette are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Local attractions

Ah, Florence, truly one of the world’s great cities. Birthplace of the Renaissance, home to Michelangelo’s David, the Uffizi gallery, a cathedral with one of the world’s largest domes, Giotto’s bell tower, the Palazzo Pitti, the arcaded Ponte Vecchio, the Boboli gardens, the Medici palace…

Sì, it’s safe to say you could easily fill several days here, and it’s recommended that you do, popping in and out at your leisure on the number 37 bus, to avoid falling victim to Stendhal Syndrome, the term coined by the 19th-century writer to describe the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of beauty and art in the city. (Frequent cappuccino and gelato breaks go some way towards warding off the onset of this malaise, you’ll be chuffed to hear.)

But it’s not all about Florence... you’re also within easy reach of the gorgeous hills of Chianti for rural rambles, wine tasting and poking about in medieval towns and villages. A drive of 20 minutes or so will take you out to a cluster of wineries to learn about how the famed reds make it from grape to glass, wander through the vines and sample the wares. Also recommended are trips to the walled towns of Monteriggioni and San Gimignano, the latter also noted for its skyline of 14 medieval towers. Both of these will take you about 45 minutes in the car

Impruneta, famed for its pottery and ceramics, is another local spot well worth a wander around: three important kilns here still follow ancient firing techniques dating back to the 11th century, with some studios open to the public for both purchases and tours. Stick around for lunch, for a pleasant terrace eatery on the town square is a splendid spot for alfresco eats while people watching; if you’re around the settlement between October and December, follow it up with a little detour to one of the many local ‘frantoio’, to which locals bring their olives to be weighed, cleaned and pressed, all in the name of making tasty olive oils.
