Heaps of space? Tick – 170,000 square metres of it. Easy access? Tick – the A14 Adriatic autostrada passes very nearby. Town facilities? Tick – Altidona and Pedaso are both about five minutes' drive away. Family-oriented Riva Verde, on the Marche coast, is certainly a place with a lot going for it… And on top of that little lot, there are views of the Adriatic to be had around the site. Indeed, it’s likely that you’ll be tempted to spend a sizeable chunk of time on the beach here – and with good reason, for the sandy stretch is lengthy and well-kept, and a very short toddle away along a quiet footpath. There’s a serviced area for those who’d like to laze on a lounger, and sports courts for folk seeking a bit more activity. When it’s time for a break from the beach, retreat back to base for further antics: perhaps at the huge waterpark (sprawling across a whopping 6000 square metres with waterslides, a hot tub and fun water features for the kids), the indoor or outdoor gym areas or the excellent dinosaur-themed play area. Organised activities, excursions and evening entertainment at the 900-seater theatre are likely to feature on your schedule if you’re here in the summer months too. For a bit more chillout time, you may select to siesta in a shady spot (there should be plenty among the site’s ancient oaks, pines and acacias) or settle at a table in the restaurant for woodfired pizzas, full meals or drinks on the sea-view terrace. If you’d rather do your own dinner, pick up barbecue supplies at the site’s well-stocked supermarket.

Local attractions

As fab as it is, it's worth peeling yourselves away from the beach now and then to meander further along the Marche coast. Top picks for chilled-out coastal ambles nearby are Grottammare’s gorgeous Old Town and truffling out the alfresco sculptures dotted around San Benedetto del Tronto; both are around 20 minutes' drive from the site. On a somewhat larger scale is the city of Ancona, 45 minutes away. Folk planning extensive European excursions can pick up ferries to Croatia and Greece from the port here, but there’s a whole load more to the place than simply onward travels – beaches, museums and the cathedral are all fine visits. Away from the coast, head to the hills for historic wanderings in the Roman tunnels and archaeology museum 15 minutes' drive away in Fermo or the Roman theatre in Urbisaglia (40 minutes). If natural scenes are more your thing, take to the trails of Monti Sibillini National Park (an hour’s drive) or delve into the Frasassi Caves (an hour and 15 minutes).
