  • Right by the beach, overlooking Marina del Cantone
  • PADI diving centre on site: book diving and snorkelling
  • Terrace, restaurant and English or continental breakfasts
You can – and oh so should – dive directly into a diving hol at this spectacular Sorrento site: for not only is Camping Residence Nettuno by the sea (right by it; see pics), it also has its own PADI centre so you can dip into diving and snorkelling under expert instruction in these beaut blue waters. Above the surface, the beach next to the site is private to the site, to aid your serene sandy times on the Italian coast, and when you're up for exploring the local area you can book trips to Capri, Positano and other local destinations directly from reception. Half an hour or so by car or just under an hour by bus will take you to the city of Sorrento, on the other side of the Sorrentine peninsula facing the Bay of Naples… it's all really rather lush around here indeed. Back at your coastal base, Camping Residence Nettuno overlooks the bay of Marina del Cantone, the seaside and fishing part of the hillside village of Nerano (and is in a tiptop spot if you seek serene and uncrowded Italian coast). Its modern facilities a spacious terrace and a food shop; family entertainment including a kids' club runs in summer. For long lazy evenings over heaped plates of local food, the restaurant serves home-cooked regional dishes including pasta, pizza and traditional Italian recipes. And if you overindulge on the vino while washing down your pasta? The bar serves English breakfasts every morning to assist recovery – as well as continental fare for the lighter of palate.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: The views of the Amalfi coast were amazing as was the little village just down the road. Food in the restaurant was good.

Disliked: The campsite was basically an ant infested car park. The pitch we were given was no where near the size we had paid for. We woke up the first morning and were completely sniped with ants in our camper. The toilet and shower facilities were poor and never very clean. The day before we left, people were arriving who had booked pitches but the pitch wasn’t available until 10 o clock at night. Very poor. The server in the mini market was extremely rude and unhelpful. I think a bit of poetic licence was used when describing this site.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: View of the sea when other campers were not parked in front of you

Disliked: Horrendous drive down for a motorhome Very dusty dirty pitches - like being in a car park without hard floor. Crammed in with hardly any space. Building work going on right next to us! Showers and toilets only just acceptable - needs an update. They never looked clean because of the dusty camp surface. Beach disappointing. Lots of steps to negotiate to get to reception, bar and market. Left early as we were very unhappy.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Pitches good size. Good Wi-Fi.

Disliked: The satnav takes you to the wrong (closed) entrance. There is no obvious sign that says USE MAIN ENTRANCE. We therefore nearly drove away and only found main entrance by chance. This is a huge impersonal campsite and lacks any real character or charm. Toilet/shower block massive but purely functional. Not all pools are open in the off season. Very expensive especially if you don’t use the pools.

Local attractions

This part of Campania is one where natives and savvy travellers come to have an Italian seaside holiday away from heaving resorts, preferring instead to settle down at the beach and bay of Marina del Cantone for peaceful days and Michelin-starred eats. This slice of Naples coastline is part of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella, famed as a particularly pretty – and even more peaceful – part of the Sorrentine peninsula. For a serene and spectacularly scenic walk, wander along the coast form Marina del Cantone to the neighbouring bay of Recommone, or stroll in the other direction (with camera) to the viewpoint of Ieranto, climbing up from Nerano. Make some time too for the towns and cities of the peninsula and the coast: Positano, Amalfi and Pompei are all within an hour to an hour and a half's drive, and you can reach the fably pretty city of Naples in under two hours.
