  • Spectacular location on top of a volcanic crater with stunning views
  • 6 kilometres from Pozzuoli and within 45 minutes of Naples and Pompeii
  • Pool, coffee bars, guided volcano tours and big woodland playground
You're not just deep in Italian volcano country at International Vulcano Solfatara Campsite, you'll be staying right on the top of the crater of an ancient dormant volcano: how fizzingly fab. The setting here is simply stunning, on the flat crater of Solfatara in the volcanic Campi Flegrei region, an area north of Naples made up of around 40 volcanoes, rich vegetation and archaeological sites such as the famed Acropolis of Cuma. This part of Campania is centrally placed for many Italian sightseeing highlights, including Naples, Pompeii, Capri and the Sorrento peninsula all within easy driving distance. Or lie dormant on site instead, among three tree-lined hectares and spectacular views of volcano and bay... taking an occasional break to plunge into the pool before clambering back onto your lounger in the spacious solarium. Then, possibly, you may care to stir your dormant self to check out other leisurely pleasures, such as a five a side football and volleyball if you're feeling particularly active, and giant chess and draughts if you're not. There are also bowling and pétanque areas, outdoor table tennis and an excellent park with swings, slides and rides. The restaurant is the place to start for regional dishes and takeaway, and you can buy groceries, ice cream, tobacco and camping bits and bobs at the summer shop. Indoor and outdoor coffee bars sell drinks, more ice cream, souvenirs, newspapers and bus and subway tickets. Solfatara Campsite can offer info to guests in lingos other than Italian at its tourist office; its guided tours of the volcano are available in Italian, French and English too.

Local attractions

Solfatara and its shooting gas steams are among the best-known sights of the volcanic Campi Flegrei region, so famed that the volcano was a popular stopoff point for the elite on their European Grand Tour. Take a guided tour of about 45 minutes or amble around under your own steam to end up at the woodland bar. The ancient Roman city of Pozzuoli is six kilometres away and can be hiked to via the volcanoes. Its famed archaeological sites include the imperial baths; the temple of Serapis; the Acropolis of Cuma, one of the oldest in the world, and the Flavian Amphitheatre, the third biggest Roman amphitheatre in Italy. Day trips to other world-famed spots are easily sorted from here: Naples is half an hour's drive away, Pompeii 45 minutes and Sorrento within an hour and 20 minutes.
