  • Beachside site with peaceful, dog-friendly pitches and lush greenery
  • A 25-minute drive to Patras; take a day trip to ancient Olympia
  • Greek restaurant and a shop selling fresh bread and milk on site
Paddles in the Gulf of Patras, followed by lounging under orange, olive and lemon trees… that’s the high life at Camping Kato Alissos, a beachside site that has views of Patraikos Bay (where you’re likely to be spending your days swimming, kicking balls and snoozing as much as you like). This peaceful, green site is just 25 minutes’ drive from Patras, the third-largest city in Greece and the capital of Peloponnese. That means you’ll be poised to learn about Greek culture, modern and old, or catch a show in the Roman Odeon, an ancient conservatory where there are often concerts in the summertime. For the record, your taste buds are in for a treat Camping Kato Alissos. The site has a restaurant with a Greek kitchen that can rustle up fresh fish and beef for lunch or dinner. Get your hands on fresh bread and fresh milk from the mini shop on site, as well as any other basic bits that you might need for a barbecue. Very handily, there are benches for cooking around the site. Whether you’re tasting the restaurant’s traditional recipes under the huge 1000-year-old olive tree or picking out another peaceful spot somewhere among the plants and trees that decorate the site, there’s plenty of scope for relaxation. The facilities are well-organised too. Among these are a shower with free hot water all day, hot-water sinks for washing your dishes, hot-water sinks for handwashing clothes, washing machines, an ironing station and a chemical disposal point.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: The bathrooms and pitches were very clean. I also liked how the pitches were under trees to shade from the sun. Unfortunately we didn’t get to experience the restaurant or bar!

Disliked: €5 for laundry! Most expensive one I’ve found in Europe so far. Also overnight there was a lot of noise from local dogs

Local attractions

First up, perhaps Patras? The city’s Holy Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle (25 minutes’ drive) is a huge basilica and pilgrimage place, while the Archaeological Museum of Patras (half an hour) has archaeological finds from the local area. You might want to take your coffee with the views of the city from Patras Castle (25 minutes) or wander down to somewhere in the central Georgiou I Square (25 minutes), before catching a show in the Apollon Theatre (25 minutes). On the outskirts of Patras, the historical winery, Achaia Clauss (20 minutes), try wine specialties such as Mavrodaphne and demestica while touring the vineyard. What day trips might you want to embark on too? Perhaps the Archaeological Site of Olympia (an hour and 10 minutes), where the ancient Olympic Games took place? A scenic train ride to the Great Cave Monastery (an hour and 20 minutes)? Other options include the Kalavryta area, where there are historic hills, the Agia Lavra Monastery, and the stalactites and stalagmites of the Cave Lakes - Kastria Cave (an hour and 55 minutes).
