  • Spectacular mountain views across the emerald Lechsee lake

  • Swimming in the neighbouring Baderwäldlesee lake
With smashing views across to the mountains over the emerald waters of Lechsee lake, not only is this site situated among beaut surroundings, but it’s also in prime position near some tiptop sightseeing spots such as Neuschwanstein Castle and the handsome 18th-century Wies Church. In the village of Lechbruck am See, Via Claudia Camping lies between a privately owned lake and a spectacular mountain range in Bavaria, and is bordered by the first main carriageway through the Alps connecting the Adriatic port of Altinum with the Danube river: the ancient Via Claudia Augusta. A second smaller swimming lake, Baderwäldlesee, is just a few minutes’ walk from the site and spot on for swimming due to the temperateness of its moorland water source. On-site downtime is sorted at Lechsee lake’s beach and in its waters, and you can use the lake’s boat moorings and slipway should you have a vessel to bob about in. The park’s two recreation rooms, specially dedicated to small people, will keep them out of trouble for a bit: they’ve got a playroom filled with toys for tiddlies and another separate rec room with a ping pong table and a chess board for the older kids; they can hire books and board games from reception too to fill even more on-site leisure time with. For some decidedly more active playtime, kidlets can clamber, swing and slide at the playground, have kick about over on the amateur football pitch, bounce balls back and forth at the sandy volleyball court, and try their hand at boccia and curling for a sporting something that’s a little more out of the ordinary. For tasty Bavarian bites, the on-site restaurant serves scrumptious stuff like Allgäu mountain-cheese noodles and crunchy salads which – natch – you can wash down with freshly pulled Bavarian beers and specially selected organic wines. For sunny days of drinking and dining, a spacious and shaded beer garden is also tagged onto the restaurant area. Among the site’s modern amenities are three sanitary buildings, a kids’ wash fun area including a baby changing room, plus four extra bathrooms with a sink, a shower and a toilet available to rent if you fancy a bit more privacy… And just in case your pet pooch needs a scrub down, there’s also a doggy shower on site. Barbecues are allowed, and you can buy gas on site.

Local attractions

There’s heaps and heaps to do around here: try something water-based with swimming, boating, rafting or canoeing on Lechsee lake, or explore the land around it on two wheels or on foot. If you’re one for going gooey over golf, then you can play a round or several at the local 18-hole golf course, five kilometres from base, among utterly fab vista of the Allgäu, Tyrol and Ammergau Alps. At Neuschwanstein Castle, not too far from Lechbruck am See, there’s a weekly holiday programme to keep kidlets entertained, as well as lots of music and culture events for grownups. For more culture, you’re also less than two hours’ drive from the lights and sights of Munich; as beer fans will already be well aware, the city is famed the world over for its beer halls (and its annual Oktoberfest celebration of the hoppy stuff), including the famed 16th-century Hofbräuhaus. Wander the streets of Munich’s Old Town to tour the city’s centuries-old buildings and myriad museums, and be sure to visit central Marienplatz square while you’re there for a regular and rather fab glockenspiel show at the town hall.
