Bavarian camping – how brill. And right in the Rott Valley Spa Triangle – how even more brill. Take a peek at that indoor pool too – roomy, swish and thermal, surrounded by a whole heap of sun terrace, it’s part of this swanky modern site’s wider wellness complex that also includes three beaut bathing lakes, a whirlpool, a sauna, a physiotherapy suite and a beauty studio. Vital CAMP Bayerbach is set up swimmingly for uber-relaxed family stays: a playground – plus three gorge swimming lakes and big lawns alongside for summer swims and splashes – are on hand to keep littlies plenty busy while grownups go off and get properly relaxed around all the wellness facilities. At reception in the wellness area you can borrow bathrobes (a small fee applies), towels and a hairdryer to keep you cosy and dry; you can also peruse a selection of wellness articles and purchase cosmetic products there too. In the Finnish and bio saunas, settle back and steam oneself among infused essential oils, and between steams cool off at the crushed ice pool or lie right in the snow outside when it’s winter. Plenty of food and drink options are at the site’s Bavarian bistro, with a scenic terrace beer garden and barbeque too. Evening entertainment is also run regularly in high season by the site team at the bistro’s events hall. Pitches are spacious and marked out across terraces, with wide-angle views across the Rottal-Inn, and the bathroom facilities are plenty roomy with private and family baths.

Local attractions

The site’s Lower Bavaria locale is spot on for hiking, cycling, horse riding and Nordic walking, and golfers will feel rightly at home around here too, for it’s a veritable golfers’ paradise, with more than 40 golf courses to tee off at around the region. City day trips are also a cinch from Vital CAMP Bayerbach: the ‘Three Rivers City’ of Passau, which lies where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet and is filled with historic attractions like a 13th-century hilltop fort and Baroque old town; Regensburg, on the Danube, has a highly handsome twin-spired Gothic cathedral and medieval core; and Landshut’s must-see is its famed medieval Trausnitz Castle. Also well worth a visit are spots like the Baroque health resort of Schärding for its vibey bar and restaurant scene; the Salzach river city of Burghausen near the Austrian border; and Altötting in the pretty Alpine foothills of Upper Bavaria. While you're in this last one, don't miss the chance to marvel at the Panorama Altötting, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a huge 1,200 m² canvas painting on the interior of a circular building (it's a bit like 360º surround-sound but with art – really rather amazing…)

Liked: Wir waren voll begeistert. Noch nie waren wir auf so einem tollen Camping Platz. Wiederholung. Ganz sicher.

Disliked: Das einzige was gefehlt hat war im Abspülraum für die Waschbecken die Stöpsel damit man richtig spülen kann.

Liked: Thermalbad, Sauna, Personal, Huckenhamer Stadl

Disliked: Thermalbad zu laut, Uhrzeiten für Erwachsene überarbeiten. Reinigungskräfte der Sanitäranlagen fangen zu früh an. Auf gewissen Plätzen ist es dann morgens extrem laut. (Staubsauger). Vielleicht sollte man dann die Fenster schließen. Morgens um fünf Uhr durch einen Sauger mit zwei Turbinen geweckt zu werden, ist nicht angenehm.

Liked: Got a pitch on a construction site, even though there were plenty of free plots.

Disliked: The restaurant stop serving food from 7pm. We ordered on arrival dinner for three but was not served.

Liked: Great site, friendly and with first class facilities. We especially liked the Wellness area for the sauna and steam room. The restaurant was well staffed and friendly too

Disliked: Not much at all. The WiFi didnt reach our part of the site but nearer the central area worked well so we had to use it whilst having a beer - so not all bad really!
