General

  • Leisure centre with lots of activities
  • By the shore of a lake suitable for swimming
  • Free wifi, restaurant, theme nights and bouncy castle

Ever tried frogs' legs? They're among the many traditional French cuisine options on the restaurant menu at Camping du Moulin in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes department of Isère – we're sure the kids will be keen...? (We certainly would be, so do inform them of their good fortune.)

If this isn't an option for the offspring, the site location will have them happy instead, as it's at a large leisure centre with a lake for supervised swimming in summer, and on the bank opposite the lakeside beach. (It's also only 25 minutes from the Parc de Moidière zoo and 45 from the French Wallabi theme park, and less than an hour from French foodie capital Lyon...)

Camping du Moulin has a waterslide, mini golf, pedalos, a bouncy castle, pétanque and volleyball facilities, a shared barbecue area, free wifi, a snack bar and that restaurant serving up frogs' legs. Themed evenings are organised in high season.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Lovely setting, quiet, understated - grassy and shaded 31/08/2016

A lovely campsite setting with the Etangs right next to the campsite but far enough away to be quiet. Pitches have plenty of space and are shaded. Being a countryside site with tress around there are also a lot of bugs, but these were not a problem for us. The lakes are well managed with swimming and water based acutivities throughout the day. A small shop for basics in reception also provides fresh bread - order the day before and it is delivered for 8.30.
The one disappointment was the toilets/ shower block which, whilst being generally of good quality, wasn't as well cleaned as it could be and is a haven for bugs, mosquitoes, etc. The roof area hasn't been cleaned for a long time and the smell whilst we were there wasn't particularly inviting.
Generally, a great 'Way from it all' campsite with good facilities.
With this in mind, it is incredibly cheap. Fantastic value for money. Our camper an pitch with electric hook up was about £10 a night in August.

    Disliked:

    Cleanliness of toilets/shower block.

Nice enough site for an overnight stay in very good weather. We were fortunate that the weather was excellent for most of the 5 nights we had booked. the lake is excellent in the summer and the small games room is ok. Staff were friendly enough.
ideally located for a daytrip to Switzerland or to the beautiful Roman town of Vienne.

    Disliked:

Not sure where the photos were taken from but the pitches we found were very difficult to get into and very uneven. The wifi only works if you are sitting immediately outside the shop and the showers were too hot to stand under. despite this we really enjoyed the lake and the surrounding area. The pedalos and Crazy Golf are free for campers, but we had to ask for vouchers to take advantage of this, which was disappointing.

The lake was amazing for children and adults alike with many great activities. The pitches were lovely and the staff went out of their way to help in any way they could. We arrived late after 11pm and had not eaten so the staff member could see we had young children and offered to cook nuggets and chips for our four children despite the restaurant having closed 2 hours previously. What a great impression to start with. The staff throughout our stay bent over backwards to help and were extremely friendly which made our holiday. The price for staying here also made this the best value for money campsite we have found in 10 years of camping in France.

    Disliked:

The shop could do with being open a little longer through the day/evening.

Local attractions

The Isère department around Camping du Moulin is filled with options for days out, at its ski resorts, villages, the Vercors Plateau or investigating for yourself why this area is so famed for hang-gliding and paragliding.

The 30 acres of parkland around the Château de Moidière are less than half an hour away, and include a zoo with prehistoric exhibits, a nature reserve, an arboretum and two labyrinths. Another popular family day out is at the Walibi Rhône-Alpes theme park, the biggest in the Rhône-Alpes and with over 30 rides and a waterpark.

Annecy and its lake and mountain views are also accessible for day trips, as is Switzerland.
