  • Family-friendly site with lots of activities, next to a natural park
  • Pool, paddling pool, beach, kids' club and river for fishing
  • Spa and fitness area with hot tub and sauna
The team at Camping Mas de Champel say it's got something for everyone, and once you clap eyes on this place you might reckon they might be right. For among the many (many) things on offer here at this Ardèche site off the tourist track and next to a natural park in France's Rhône-Alpes are many (many) things to do for kids – and as you also might reckon, happy kids = happy grownups… The owners have children of their own, so they're very au fait with what small sorts and families like to do on holiday, and have set up the site accordingly: at Mas de Champel excited enfants have access to a paddling pool, a big pool, a sandy beach next to a river on which to build competitive castles, loads of space for playing, running around or riding their bikes… And if this doesn't keep them busy enough, ages four to 10 can try out all sorts of new activities at the kids' club. Elsewhere on site – they did say they've got something for everyone – grownup guests could swim in the river, laze in the pool or on the beach, tackle some fishing, or try cycling, pétanque tournaments, table tennis or volleyball. If you're after even more of a treat? A spa and fitness area with hot tub and sauna is on site too.

Local attractions

Once you're finally off site, there's something for everyone in the countryside surrounding Mas de Champel too. This is away from the mainstream tourist area of the Rhône-Alpes, in splendidly scenic countryside with pure air and a warm Mediterranean climate, and in an area of the central Ardèche known for its lovely landscapes and peaceful way of life with traditional rural values. If you want old-fashioned France, c'est ici… All around the area are wild swimming spots, climbing places, clifftop villages, nature and wildlife, and hiking tracks with viewpoints you'll want to frame… Take time too for the medieval village of Chalençon and the village of Beauchastel, both 15 kilometres away, and the Ray Pic waterfall and Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, both within 45 minutes' drive. Also nearby, if you're around in June, L’Ardéchoise is the biggest mass bike race in Europe and wheely worth a watch; at any time of the year, find some time to hang around Aquarock Adventure's ropes, rocks and rivers in the Eyrieux Valley.

Electric optional gravel and sand pitch

Liked: Absolutely nothing

Disliked: Everything. Chemical waste overflowing, haphazard pitches. Generally very dirty. No water on site. Site was a health hazard. We arrived then promptly left soon after. We forfeited our money but this was preferable to staying.
