  • Scenic Hautes-Alpes site, five minutes' walk from Orpierre town centre
  • Close to rock climbing routes; guided hikes and bike trips in summer
  • Heated pool, kids' pool, waterslide and playground with climbing wall
The town of Orpierre is a pleasant contradiction: these sleepy cobbled streets lend themselves well to chilled afternoon strolls but are also a hub for thrill-seekers, who flock to its many local climbing spots. Similarly, guests at Camping Les Princes d'Orange (a five-minute walk from the village centre) can be as active or as laidback as they like. Whether it's gorgeous views or active times you seek, this Hautes-Alpes park has them in spades. There’s a real family vibe here, with a roomy heated swimming pool (open from June to September), a waterslide, a paddling pool, a playground with climbing wall and a games room to choose from. Guests who like to get into the competitive spirit have ample room to sort games of basketball, volleyball, football or water polo with new friends. High-season highlights include 'the great pétanque challenge' – if you don't bowl like a pro, it might possibly be down to the drinks that are on hand throughout. Mountain bike outings and guided hikes (led by a mid-altitude mountain guide) are also organised in summer for those who fancy seeing more of the surroundings – and really, with splendid views like these, who wouldn't? Folk who know about their climbing are well-served here, with around 30 bolted routes to make their way along around the village. Orpierre also has a supermarket, bakery and a couple of restaurants. Handily, there's a snack bar, mini market and bread delivery service on site for those who don't fancy venturing out.

Local attractions

Orpierre (a five-minute walk away) is home to a nifty tourist office that provides plenty of tips to newcomers. These parts are perhaps best known for climbing opportunities, but what goes up must come down: try parascending at Laragne-Montéglin to take bird's-eye views to a whole new level (20 minutes' drive). Less hair-raising but equally jolly jaunts are on hand at Les Gorges de la Méouge (25 minutes), including swimming, horse riding, kayaking and mountain biking. The Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park (45 minutes) is home to lavender fields and olive groves, with a rich terroir that'll likely please any foodies passing through. The park is pretty far from any major cities, making it one of the best regions in France for sky-gazing. Budding historians may well appreciate the medieval citadel at Sisteron (35 minutes), which hosts a far-famed light festival each summer. Further afield, the Château d’Aulan (50 minutes) is open for private tours, while those seeking pastoral times should head to Céüse goat farm (55 minutes).
