Colourful lavender fields, Provençal markets, stunningly scenic villages and more than 300 sunshine days per year? Oui, s’il vous plait... At Camping L’Epi Bleu, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Banon in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, that’s exactly what guests get. See the plateaux and lavender fields of Provence in high style with a hot air balloon trip over the countryside (float away from the village of Forcalquiere, half an hour from L’Epi Bleu), or stay on solid ground by hiking or cycling (rent a bike on site). Follow the ‘Lavender roads’ to Sault, or from Ventoux to Luberon, for some sweetly smelling excursions, pedal to Mont Ventoux for some of the best biking around, or stick to the long-distance routes that crisscross the area. When you’re ready to put your feet up, relatively speaking, head back to the site for pétanque comps, table football, pinball and ping pong, or to take a dip in the heated pool (it’s got a waterslide too…). A snack bar and brasserie are open in high season and there's an on-site grocery store.

Local attractions

The area around Camping L’Epi Bleu is full of spectacular scenic hilltop villages and towns where exploring is an absolute must: start with Banon and its famous bookstore (Le Bleuet), before travelling on to Rousillon, Gordes, Bonnieux, Sault, Montbrun les Bains, Bedoin and Forcalquier, all within an hour of the site. The scenic isn’t confined to the urban – make tracks to the stunning Gorges de la Nesque or the fab Penitents at Mée, then head into Luberon Natural Regional Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve about half an hour from L’Epi Bleu. You don’t have to go that far either… Visiting the Colorado de Rustrel, a natural ochre masterpiece 20 minutes from the site, is essential for snap-happy guests. There’s plenty for history buffs too: within an hour of L’Epi Bleu, you can poke around the Abbey of Valsaintes, the Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde, the museum and gardens of Salagon Priory, and the Château de Sauvan 18th-century manor house. Get a feel for local delicacies with a truffle hunting excursion just over an hour away, or stick closer to home with visits to lavender distilleries at Les Agnels and Les Coulets. Kids in tow? Load them into the car for a jaunt to Le Jarditrain amusement park or Wave Island waterpark, between Auvignon and Carpentras, or bring budding stargazers to the nearby Haute-Provence observatory.
