General

  • Peaceful riverside site just outside Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé
  • A 20-minute drive from the thermal spas of La Roche-Posay
  • Bike and canoe rental available on site

If you’re one of those (sensible) types who fancies a peaceful rural retreat but still wants to be within easy ambling distance of restaurants, shops and the like, sort yourself a stay at Vienne's Camping Le Grand Pré.

The peace and quiet part of the equation comes to you courtesy of the setting, between ancient cliffs and the Gartempe river; meanwhile, a 10-minute stroll from the site is the little village of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, home to a restaurant, café and grocery store plus the obligatory bakery.

Should you require further urban amenities, there are more restaurants (along with some scenic woods and river views) in Angles-sur-l’Anglin, 10 minutes away by car. A bit further afield, it's around 20 minutes' drive to historic wanderings through the medieval streets of Chauvigny or warm-water wallowing at the famed thermal baths in La Roche-Posay. Or get prepped to get climbing: Le Grand Pré is 10 minutes' drive from the famed rock climbing site of La Guignoterie.

Facilities on site are kept to a minimum to maintain the peaceful vibe, but there's plenty of space for the small sorts to run about, and various useful amenities to make life easy: bike hire, canoe hire, a barbecue area and a small shop.

We had a wonderful stay at Camping le Grand Pre, and were warmly welcomed by Patrick and Linda. We were passing through and arrived late at night so rented a tipi, which was very cosy and super comfortable - had a wonderful night's sleep. The next morning we enjoyed all the space under the trees around the tent by playing football and badminton (with borrowed equipment from the site). There was also a table and chairs set up and a hammock just by the tent which made the stay all the more comfortable. Before we left we went for a refreshing dip in the river - water shoes would have been handy here, but we enjoyed it nevertheless. There is a lot to do around the site, such as hiking, canoeing, climbing, visiting the medieval town of chauvigny. If we had had more time we would definitely have done some of these things. Camping le Grand Pre is peaceful, quiet, simple and exactly what we look for in a campsite. Highly recommend!

If you love the deepest, quietest areas of France then this is it. A beautiful site set among scattered majestic pines on a rolling site next to the (fenced off) River Gartemps. There is ample shade and space. All pitches are close to power and water.....take care with the water, everyone gets the welcome wet leg as the pressure is terrific.

Hosts Linda and Patrick are outstanding. Generous, kind, helpful and fun. They keep the entire site immaculate and clean.

Within 800m the village offered a boulangerie, post office, mini supermarché, bar, restaurant (for lunches mostly) and a post office. It also happens to a lovely walk/pedal.

The old part of the village is beautiful and historic. Nearby villages include some of France’s most beautiful. Nearby St Savin has a world heritage site with its Abby.

Facilities are simple, clean and typical municipal. Hot water is by solar.

Fabulous exploration by cycle along the three local rivers through lush green quietness with searingly hot burnt plains in between completed a wonderful week.

Top Tip. Go to the Friday night session next door at The Distillerie. It is not what you think.....

    Disliked:

Only basic tired facilities, though spotless.

Camper Vans will need to find a disposal site elsewhere (think there may be one in the village)

Make sure to take enough resources to get level.

Local attractions

Get out and explore by hiring a bike or canoe from the site; friendly reception staff can also give you details of hikes both gentle and strenuous. There are some comely little fishing spots along the Gartempe river and the nearby Anglin, and more than 100 routes for experienced climbers along the limestone cliffs around Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé.

Drive up to Angles-sur-l’Anglin (10 minutes), to potter about in the pretty village and to wander around the ruins of its hilltop fortress and see the prehistoric carvings in the Roc-aux-Sorciers cave. If you’re partial to a castle or two, fit in a trip to Chauvigny, where there are five to pick from (or visit them all on a castle crawl).

La Roche-Posay, a 20-minute drive from the site, is the place to visit for a golf course, horse racing and thermal spa sessions. Even if you’re not actually heading into the baths, the Parc Thermal is a handsome place to wander around, with its gardens divided into themed areas.

If the kids demand to up the adrenaline levels somewhat, the fab Futuroscope theme park is 45 minutes’ drive away.
