Venice in la France… with barques and canoes available for hire right from your site's own moorings: what a splendid place in which to be messing around in boats. Have at it at Camping Le Lidon, a riverside site in the green countryside of the peaceful Marais Poitevin, surrounded by the waterways of the Venise Verte/Green Venice. Get out to explore via a traditional flat-bottomed barque or canoe from the site moorings; cycle or amble peacefully along the waterways; take a horse-drawn carriage ride or opt for all of the above… Le Lidon is a family-friendly site, spread comfortably over three colourful and well set-out hectares. It has a pool, a games room and a playground, as well as a restaurant serving traditional French cuisine, pizzas and salads, and a bar serving ice cream and drinks. Eat indoors or on the terrace, which is open all day. A site shop sells bread, croissants, brioche and basic groceries, as well as a selection of regional specialities.

Route directions

Take the A10 and exit at Junction 33, following the N248 then the D102 through Frontenay-Rohan-Rohan. At the T-junction turn right, onto the D1 heading north and at Sansais take the D3 west until you reach Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud. Once you have reached the village, turn right onto Rue de Pied Blanc then turn left onto Rue de Ricansalle and follow this until you see the campsite, on your right-hand side.

Local attractions

Out on the water first, of course, by hiring a barque or canoe from the Le Lidon team or by taking a guided tour from one of the many starting points around the marshes. Flat paths and small roads suitable for family walks are easily accessed from the site for strolls. Wildlife is easily spotted around here too: the Natural Reserve of St-Denis-du-Payré and the bird park at local town Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud are good starting points to find out more about the animals, birds and plants of the region. This old land is full of historical highlights too, like local villages such as Coulon, Saint-Georges-de-Rex and Arçais; the abbeys of Maillezais, Nieul-sur-l'Autise and Saint-Jean d'Angely, and the quiet riverside town of Surgeres with its church dating back to the 11th century and the 18th-century Château de Surgères. Further afield, it's well worth the drive for the beaches of the Île de Ré and La Rochelle, about 50 kilometres away, and for theme park days at Futuroscope within 80 kilometres and the Puy du Fou within 100.
