We liked the site very much. Very clean. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

We were forced to leave the site one day early because we were bitten to death by either mosquitoes or midges. We moved from one pitch to another in order to try and get away from the insects but to no avail. The owner offered us an option of staying in a luxury home for no extra cost but the damage had been done by then. He gave us a bottle of wine which was a very nice gesture but we would not consider returning to this site because of the insects.

The staff was great, very helpful and friendly, you can borrow gas bbq and rent a fridge, they have activities for the kids, definitively child friendly. We also took our dog and had no problems at all. Big supermarkets around to do your shopping. Lovely towns near by to visit. Big dog friendly beaches.

    Disliked:

Not enough shower facilities, we were queuing up to get in at the end of the day. We stay during a very hot period but the last day the temperature drop and the swimming pool is not heated so it could be a big down if you're staying during a bad week weather wise. Shop was small and expensive, didn't have many items. Beach is not walking distance and traffic to the beach is bad.

Local attractions

Royan is rightly prized in Charente-Maritime as a seaside resort with five beaut beaches and eye-catching architecture, particularly that of its 1958 church the Notre Dame. Have a look too at its marina (envy-inducing), the gardens under the cube of the Palais des congrès, and the Central Market, again designed by architects in the 50s to be as noticeable as poss.

Royan is set at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, the biggest in western Europe and where the Dordogne and Garonne rivers meet. Take a guided boat tour among its marshes, meadows and cliffs, to wildlife watch critter such as herons and storks, and to visit (all) its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Blaye Citadel, Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc. Ferries run daily across the estuary from Royan to Le Verdon-sur-Mer.

Venturing a bit further around Royan from Les Chèvrefeuilles, you could/should have a look at the Cordouan lighthouse, the oldest in France; Mornac sur Seudre, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France; the squat 11th-century Church of St Radegonde at Talmont-sur-Gironde, and the Forest of la Coubre, the giant wooded area near Royan.

If you're around with the kids, popular family picks around the region are the Luna Park theme park, and La Palmyre Zoo, in the forest of Les Mathes and home to around 1,600 mammals, reptiles and birds.
