General

  • Family-friendly site five minutes' drive from Mers-les-Bains
  • Half an hour from the Bay of the Somme for seal spotting
  • Covered heated pool, kids' activities, bouncy castle and snack bar

To the sea, to the sea… say it over and over if you wish, as there are loads of attractions along the Picardie coastline – enough to keep drawing you back to the seaside time and again however long you stay. Beaches, but of course, but also nature reserves, a maritime forest, seals to spy, a cliffside funicular, watersports, a seaside steam train…

Settle in for a stay at family-run Camping Le Rompval for easy access to all of the above: the seaside resort of Mers-les-Bains is a swift five-minute drive away, and Le Tréport and its funicular railway is just across the harbour. Within driving distance is seal spotting at the Bay of the Somme, as well as scenery spotting at the medieval town of Saint Valery sur Somme and a whole heap more.

A covered heated pool means pooltime is a goer on site come rain or shine, while table tennis, pétanque, a bouncy castle and a playground keep things busy on dry land. And, in a sensible bit of site design, the snack bar is right next to the play area, opening out onto a raised terrace area from which you can oversee (literally) your small folk as you sit back with a coffee or pizza.

In the heady days of high summer the site also lays on organised activities – sports and other frolics for kids on weekdays and at least one evening of family fun per week.

Please note

The indoor swimming pool is open between 15/05 and 15/09.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Decent sight in quiet location with good amenities 18/06/2017

Nice flat pitches with standard 3 pin electricity connections and water close by. The site is quiet and the facilities look great - in particular, the covered pool which we were unable to use unfortunately. The bar overlooks the children's play area and the pool from a height which would make it easy to keep an eye on children from a distance.

The site is an easy run into Dieppe if you are making or arriving from the ferry and there is an excellent choice of supermarkets and other out of town stores just five minutes away.

Proud of it's 'eco credentials' - the facilities are designed into the landscape with living roofs and the site has featured on French TV for this reason.

    Disliked:

As is common, a barrier prevents access to the site and in early June reception closed at 5. As a booked latecomer, I was surprised that there was no note at the reception giving advice. We were not too late so felt able to call the emergency number and access was made available. This would be a more serious problem if arriving from Dieppe on the night ferry and there is no real space for late arrivals outside the camp.

Some touring pitches are two deep from the site access road and when busy this may mean you have to cross neighbouring pitches with van, car or on foot.

The road from Mers Les Bains is a bit rough but the campsite is well signed so don't lose heart! Mers Les Bains itself is pleasant but out of season is much quieter and shuts up earlier than English resorts of similar size would do!

Really enjoyed a quiet fortnight 19/09/2016

We really enjoyed our stay, very helpful and friendly, beautiful area the caravan was clean and comfortable. It was suitable for all ages and the way the site was laid out we felt we had privacy as well. It was close to the town's and shops but far enough away to have the peace and quiet of the countryside, and also near to the sea. Every thing you could ask for.

    Disliked:

The only problem was WiFi which I needed to get everyday, as I like listening to my radio and BBC TV apart from that no problems.

Friendly staff, and well kept site in lovely area 26/08/2016

This was a nice site, well kept, and in easy reach of Mers-les-bains which is a beautiful seaside town. The staff were very friendly and were extremely patient with my very broken schoolgirl French. Not a great deal of English was spoken by the staff but we managed ok! The site was safe for our children to cycle around and there was a nice play area with sand pit, slide, swings etc and a fenced off pool that had a removable roof. The caravan was very well set out with two twin bedrooms on one side, a spacious living area and double bedroom at the other end.

    Disliked:

Thought it was a bit odd when we arrived as all the cutlery and crockery was out on the table, and a staff member checked everything off on a list before handing us the key. We were asked to take everything out of the cupboards when we left and the caravan was physically checked and counted before we left. This is not something that we have had to do before but it did have the added benefit of our security deposit being immediately refunded, and I expect it reduces disputes. Not really a 'dislike', just unexpected!
The caravan was a little dusty when we arrived, but nothing major, and was otherwise clean and well kept.
We arrived at about 8pm, and had dinner at the snack bar at about 8.30pm. The snack bar was open until 9pm. The food was nice but the service was a bit slow - possibly because the staff members were also having their dinner at the same time!
Otherwise, only minor disliked, and I would definitely go back.

    Everything really clean.

    Disliked:

Static we stayed in was tatty, because the place was older. The door to the bathroom was coming apart at the bottom, we had to get someone in to fix the fridge door. Could have done with a kettle. The expel air above the hob had the enamel coming off. I have photos if you want them. Apart from this we enjoyed our stay.
The swimming pool was advertised along the road at 28c but was nowhere near that.

Local attractions

Mers-les-Bains is a mightily handsome place to wander around – head to the seafront to see some of the finest of the colourful villas, built in the late 19th century with all manner of architectural features to look out for (balconies, turrets and ceramic nameplates among them). There’s a splendid Art Deco church to look around as well, plus of course a great swathe of beach. If it’s activity you seek, the town has a horse riding centre, a tennis club, a bowling alley and watersports centre for a spot of paddleboarding or kitesurfing.

Across the harbour from Mers-les-Bains is Le Tréport, famed for its funicular railway up the chalk cliffs for fab views over the town and out to sea. Look toward the land side and you’ll hopefully be able to spot the Château d’Eu, just a few minutes’ drive away and also worth a visit, not only to see the grand mansion itself but also to trot through the park and gardens.

Château fans are also well advised to visit Château Fort de Rambures, half an hour from the site, to see a proper classic castle (all fairytale-style circular turrets, pointy roofs and a moat, of course).

For a gentler way to see some of the scenery, take the Baie de Somme railway and spend the day puffing your way between the beaches and little seaside villages on a historic steam train.
