This well-equipped site is a fab place to stay for Vendée voyagers young and old. Set in beauteous countryside and located less than three kilometres from excellent beaches, Camping Le Bois Masson makes it a cinch to get out and explore this much-loved region. Make sure to pack your swimmers: whatever the weather, guests can make a splash, whether in the indoor pool, outdoor pool or paddling area. Sporty visitors will likely appreciate the fitness centre and tennis court: those looking to cool off afterwards can head to the bar for a refreshing vino. A spa, sauna and hammam are on hand for a post-workout treat – or, for that matter, just because… Pedal through local lanes à bicyclette (bike hire can be arranged on site) or head to the beach for more relaxation. Local attractions

Saint-Jean-de-Monts (five minutes' drive) is home to eight kilometres of fine golden sand and is a popular leisure spot for locals and visitors alike. Shellfish can be harvested along these shores, while those taking to the waters can relax in the knowledge that lifeguards are on hand. The town also has a golf course (10 minutes) for grownups looking to let off some steam, while kids may well enjoy the two waterparks located within a ten-minute drive from base. Île de Noirmoutier (30 minutes) can be reached by road thanks to a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The island is a haven for wildlife, with 50 kilometres of splendid waymarked trails that allow guests to survey its length and breadth. For more offshore adventure, catch the ferry that leaves from Fromentine (20 minutes) and sail over to Île d'Yeu (crossing time around 90 minutes). People have lived on this outcrop since prehistoric times: ancient menhirs and dolmens, fishing villages and towering lighthouses can all be visited in a day trip to this far-flung spot.
