General

  • Lakeside site in a national forest, a kilometre from a big sandy beach
  • Heated pool with deckchairs alongside; watersports centre next door
  • Snack wagon, bike hire, playground and grocery shop

Settle down in Sarthe for a lakeside site in a national forest at Camping Lac de Sille Indigo, near Sillé-le-Guillaume about half an hour from Le Mans: whether it's forest hikes or watery sports you're after, you'll access outdoorsy activities of all sorts from the site and in its surroundings.

The woodland around the site is part of the national Forest of Sillé, covering over 3,350 hectares of green and peaceful pace popular for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, ziplining and fishing. A leisure and watersports centre is right next door for arranging rafting, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing.

Start off first with an amble over to the friendly team at reception, who can share their tips and tourist info on the vast amount of stuff to see and do in the region. There are books on the area at this part of the site too, as well as a free internet point and board games for peaceful afternoons. Bikes can be hired next to reception, to take out on the lakeside paths or on the trails further into the forest.

Next? The heated pool, perhaps, with deckchairs and parasols available alongside for your out of water use, and then perhaps a stroll to the snack wagon for a simple bite to eat on its terrace or to take away and picnic on in a quiet spot by the lake? The central games lodge is a good spot too for a more relaxed time, and is open late if you feel like settling down with a book or to watch TV.

To up the ante and continue the active theme, volleyball, table tennis, table football and pétanque are also around to try on site; there's a big sandy playground to occupy the kids, and a full entertainment and activities programme runs in July and August: there's archery, forest pony trekking, sports tournaments (including the weekly Great Games challenge) and a kids' club on weekday mornings for ages five to 11. Concerts, theatre, open-air cinema and themed dinners are held on summer evenings.

Nearby Sillé beach can be reached with a stroll of about 20 minutes through the forest; follow the path a couple of kilometres in the other direction to reach the supermarkets, shops, bars and tourist information office of Sillé-le-Guillaume.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The snack wagon is open during the May bank holiday weekends and in July and August.

    We really enjoyed this site:

pitches under trees and far from each other on a nice scenic site
doesn't feel like a grass carpark or a factory like some of them do
lovely little pool shallow enough for kids
games room stays open late to sit and read or play in
We arrived late but the manager was totally friendly and delayed all our check-in to the next day
    barbecue rental
    great lakeside location
    relaxed atmosphere
nice evening activities for the kids
    very clean
    feels rustic
you really felt like you had a bit of privacy and space

    Disliked:

i don't really expect wi-fi when camping, but while they had wi-fi it was very patchy
expensive beer from the snack wagon
a kitchen unit would be nice
the lake beach is packed, but you can avoid it and swim in the pool or at the campsite
you can hear music off the beach at night, but it's pretty far away and I didn't find it intrusive

Local attractions

You don't have to go far to access spectacular Pays de la Loire forest, countryside and beach days from the site, or to drive far to get to famed regional highlights like Fresnay-sur-Sarthe and department capital Le Mans. The parish church and the Château of Sillé are classed as historical monuments in the local town.

Like its regional neighbours Evron, Jublains, Saulges and Mayenne, the red town of Le Mans is a designated French Town of Art and History, with an illustrious history to delve into and plenty of old buildings to see. The Cité Plantagenet or the Old Town is the main place to potter around, and you should also have a look at the Roman walls, lauded as being among the best preserved in Europe.

Le Mans is a green space too – famed as the second greenest in France, in fact – so seek out some garden time after a stroll around the Old Town and the Roman walls. Among its many green areas are the Jardins Pierre de Ronsard, the Arche de la Nature and the Jardins des Plantes, covering five hectares.

Getting into the countryside, trek along to investigate the Alpes Mancelles and the spectacular Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park, a land of moorland and forest, orchards and rapidly flowing rivers: look out for deer, rabbits, hares and wild boar while on your scenic travels.
