  • Family-friendly site in the stunning Loire valley
  • Five minutes’ walk from canoeing, kayaking, boat trips on the Loire
  • An hour’s drive from Puy du Fou theme park
Does a stay in the stunning Loire Valley, close to castles and vineyards, and moments from the banks of the mighty Loire float your boat? If yes, then stroll on over to Camping de la Promenade, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Montjean sur Loire in the Pays de la Loire region. La Promenade is a top spot for active getaways: cycle off on the 900-kilometre Loire à Velo route, which passes through Montjean sur Loire, get out on the river with canoeing or kayaking, or get under the water with some diving. For more sedate exploration of the Loire, take a boat trip from Montjean, or let the on-site team help you plan something else in the area. Need a break from your adventuring? Spend a day or two hanging out on site, where there’s plenty to keep you entertained: send the kids to the playground while you take to the volleyball court, then reconvene to challenge each other in pétanque or ping pong. During high season, you can spend an afternoon at the indoor (April to September) and outdoor (July and August) pools, while les enfants spend time at the kids' club. There’s a snack bar on site for when you get peckish, and the grocery store should have everything you need for a barbecue (there’s a supermarket five minutes away if not). If you want to venture off to treat yourself, there are plenty of restaurants to try within 10 minutes.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Laid back approach. Defined pitches some in full sun some under trees. Although we had no children with us there were lots of children’s activities in full swing and good play areas. We enjoyed the outdoor pool to cool off. Quiet roads to cycle along outside the site. Didn’t use the bar or restaurant but ordered bread on a daily basis. Site quiet at night.

Liked: Regularly cleaned toilets and showers. Good size pitches with mature hedging between them. Convenient power and water

Disliked: Lack of staff for both reception and bar. Same person doing both so queues got quite long.

Liked: Enjoyed the outdoor pool and activities on site; pitch size was good. Easy access for walks to and along the river.

Disliked: Food was not very nice at the cafe for the price; also not enough toilets for the size of site. Couldn’t access the free WiFi.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Big site with great activities for sporty teenagers (table-tennis, basketball, football, swimming pool), good location for cycling, some beautiful villages along the river, clean facilities.

Disliked: Would be good to have more chairs/sun loungers by the pool, some of the pitches are quite a walk from the toilets/shower block

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Superb amenities and child entertainment, restaurant open till late at night. Toilets have paper and soap. Two swimming pools, etc. This site is definitely for families to stay several days.

Disliked: Many insects in our tent, including small roaches. Our site did not have electricity (according to the map it should). The road outside is being repaired, so need to make a long detour to arrive.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: A medium sized campsite and it was not full to capacity when we visited in July, meaning the campsite felt spacious and calm. Free choice of pitch on arrival, some are very spacious and others quite small. We got a big pitch, because the site was not full. A pitches were level and with hedging (though some of the hedging was scant and old, depending on the pitch. I liked the location next to the river and the town of Montjean-sur-Loire. A great location to explore. My kids liked the choice of outdoor and indoor swimming pool, and ordering morning bread from the snack bar. It's a commercial campsite (not privately owned), but the staff were welcoming and friendly. The sanitary block was cleaned regularly and water was available on each pitch - a nice touch.

Disliked: Only one sanitary block, so if you are a not pitched next to it, it's a long walk compared to some campsites. Would have preferred higher and thicker hedging to act as a wind break for family tents, but the wind never reached problem levels, so just a preference. Small tents low enough to be sheltered. My son was not interested in the activities the kids club offered, it was pitched very young. It was about 30 min drive to Angers, but over 1 hour to some of the key guide book sites and chateaux on the Loire.

Local attractions

The entire area around Camping de la Promenade is a must-explore for history buffs: close at hand are the stunning Château de Serrant and L’Epinay windmill, while a trip into Angers (less than half an hour’s drive) will get you to Château d’Angers and the medieval Maison d’Adam (home to the Angers artisans). If you’re happy with a longer journey, excursions to the fab Château de Brissac (it has its own opera house) and the troglodyte village of Rochemenier are within an hour, and there’s even some history for fans of the vin with a jaunt to the Vine and Wine Museum of Anjou-Saumur, half an hour away. Kids might be chafing at the bit by now, so if you’ve got some mini equestrians trotting along behind you, saddle up for an afternoon at L’isle Briand racecourse, 35 minutes from la Promenade (time your visit well and you might be around for the Anjou-Loire Challenge, the longest race in the world). If that doesn’t get them jumping for joy, try Le Jardin des Kangarous, Terra Botanica theme park and the zoos at Boissière du Doré and Doué la Fontaine, or pile into the car for a trip to the spectacular Puy de Fou.
