General

  • Family-friendly site in the stunningly scenic Loire Valley
  • Châteaux, vineyards and theme parks within half an hour’s drive
  • Heated pool with waterslides, and pampering at on-site spa

Glorious countryside, spectacular châteaux and more vineyards than you could shake a glass at? That’s an emphatic oui s’il vous plaît… and that’s exactly what you’re signing up for at the Loire Valley-based Camping Parc de Montsabert, a family-friendly site less than five minutes from the village of Coutures in the Maine-et-Loire department of Pays de la Loire.

To say the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley is worthy of a lengthy explore is a gross understatement – the team on site will be happy to point you in the right directions for country walks, tougher hikes and a ‘Loire by bike’ route, so you should have no trouble getting out and about under your own steam. For explores with a difference, trot over to De Boissay Farm for picnic strolls with donkeys, or nab yourself a hot air balloon ride from one of the scenically fab launch sites within 40 minutes of base.

Rest weary feet with a day of not moving an inch back on site, unless that inch is to make your way to the spa for massages and treatments… then splash around the waterpark and slides, try your hand at archery or tennis, rack up the points in pétanque or play a round of miniature golf.

When you’re feeling peckish, take a meander to the on-site restaurant or snack bar and takeaway, secure supplies in the on-site grocery, or rent a barbecue for major summer cookery vibes.

This site is a member of Yelloh! Village group.

    - Friendly staff
    - Indoor soft play great on the days it rained to keep the kids amused
    - Pitches level and clean

    Disliked:

    - Bit noisy at night
    - Pool area a bit dirtier than expected compared to other French campsites. Think it’s as the area you take your shoes off is very close to the dirt so you get a lot of mud.

    Disliked:

We arrived without any towels, we did not have any bed covers for our stay. The hot water did not work, the plugs in the sink did not hold the water in the basin. The shop had very few useful supplies. Pages of what you can't do and the rules etc. We had never been in one of these camps before so it would have been useful to clearly state what you needed. But we will never do this again.

    Nothing

    Disliked:

Attitude of staff poor, poor customer service skills, majority are miserable and rude
    Food and drink very expensive
    Pitch shady and overgrown
    Roads around campsite are narrow
Shop poorly stocked and if you hadn’t ordered bread the day before you wouldn’t get any!
Area - nothing to do - it’s very isolated, no local areas to visit on foot at all
Pool area - slabs loose and uneven, handrails loose
    Not enough sun loungers
    Not enough seats or tables
Slide pool not deep enough to land securely for the kids so didn’t use it
Site is not very accommodating to the British clients
Bar staff often ignored you and then served french or Dutch, who seem to take priority
Couldn’t order food if not booked on an evening!
Entertainment shocking childlike games, I.e musical chairs !!!
Noise from the bar late into the night

The shop was advertised as fresh produce which we assumed would include vegetables and fruit. It was a shame that it didn't, especially as it meant that we needed to drive to get to anywhere with those things.

Lovely campsite especially for those with children. The swimming pool particularly was fantastic with a cover that can open and close at the touch of a button so you could use it whatever the weather.
Lots for the kids to do - much of it free.
Very clean toilet and shower blocks.
    Good restaurant and bar.

    Disliked:

Service at the reception could be a bit hit and miss. Generally very friendly but sometimes a little slow to react - especially with regards to opening the gate to new arrivals who didn't yet have a key.
My only other criticism is that the "mini-disco" for children started a bit late.

The children's facilities are great. There is a huge trampoline in the trees and a huge indoor inflatable play for any rainy days. The pool and slides are ok but we've certainly had better at other sites for less money. It felt nice and safe for the kids to roam free as the site is not too big. The animations team are really enthusiastic and friendly and do a great job they deserve medals they work such long days and they are always smiling.

    Disliked:

In the high season when we visited there are not enough sun loungers and because of this everyday people would come to the pool and put their towels on them to reserve them. However as they only used them for part of the day it just adds to the problem. Also not enough seats in the restaurant for eating in the evenings. Though I don't think the staff could have copied with more customers. Service was very hit and miss when they were busy. You could stand at the bar for ages and the staff would just ignore you then someone else would stand next to you and they'd serve them first.

Local attractions

Tipplers are well served around here: within 35 minutes' drive of the site, you can be sampling wine, Brut, liqueurs and spirits at a handful of vineyards and distilleries. If you only have the time for one or two, make them the Cointreau distillery for samples of the famed orange liqueur, and Château de Montreuil-Bellay, a stunning castle and winery with year-round tastings.

If Montreuil-Bellay has you falling head over heels (hic) for châteaux, there are plenty more round these parts that will help to grow your love affair. Within 15 minutes, Montsabert, Brissac – the highest castle in France, with plenty of caves to explore – and Montgeoffroy are the closest, but it’s worth going further afield for the largest fortress in Europe at Brézé and the striking châteaux in Saumur and Angers.

Kids in tow not as into wine and castles as you are? Bring them instead to meet the animals at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine zoo or to wander around the Terra Botanica theme park – and if that’s not enough for them, try a longer jaunt to Puy de Fou, the historic theme park that’s a rival in popularity to Disneyland.
