  • Peaceful family-owned site five minutes' drive from Cléré-sur-Layon
  • Around an hour's drive from Puy du Fou theme park
  • Surrounded by wineries of the Anjou region; hire bikes to get around
You’re bound to have a fine time among the vines at Camping Le Serpolin – this family-run 12-acre site on an old farmstead is right in the middle of the Anjou wine region, and a tiptop spot for those who like a tipple or two on hols. Driving’s not a terribly sensible idea for wine tasting, of course, so owners Matt and Donna-Marie have amassed a collection of bikes to hire out to guests who’d like to pedal their way round the local vineyards (or they can hook you up with horseback tours from a local riding centre for any non-vino days). They’ve even been known to organise their own tasting tours in summer, so it’s worth having a chat to see if they’ve anything planned (or at least get tipoffs as to the best places to aim for). In between wine sippings, it’s back to base for fishing, wildlife watching or general relaxation by the large well-stocked pond, or a dip in the plunge pool. There’s also a playground and a pétanque court, handily placed next to the barbecue area for sociable evenings of grilling and games (and perhaps just the odd glass of wine…) For supplies to chuck on that barbie, there’s a village shop five minutes’ drive away in Cléré-sur-Layon, and a supermarket, bakery and restaurant within 15 minutes.

Local attractions

You could easily fill a lengthy Loire Valley trip just shuttling around between châteaux: from Le Serpolin it’s less than 40 minutes’ drive to the elegant castles at Brézé, Brissac Quincé and Montreuil Bellay. If you’re touring with tiddlers who’ll only stomach one château, make it the one at Saumur (40 minutes’ drive); you can follow it up with visits to the tank museum, a show at the Cadre Noir military riding academy and a canoe trip on the Loire. You might even sneak in a few sips of the sparkling wines that the city’s famed for... Rather less fancy than a castle is the Rochemenier troglodyte village (half an hour away); similar ancient caves have also made fab homes for the animals at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (20 minutes). Other family-friendly outings nearby include the indoor/outdoor waterpark Les Bassins du Thouet (25 minutes), races at Karting Val d’Argenton (15 minutes) and the rides, trampoline park and shows at Parc de la Vallée (20 minutes). A journey to Puy du Fou theme park will take you an hour or so in the car.
