General

  • Friendly peaceful site on the canalside 10 minutes from Watten
  • Snack bar on site with a sunny terrace overlooking the canal
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and ferry ports at Dunkirk or Calais

Dashing off to Dunkirk or Calais for your ferry? Don’t race off too fast, for there’s much to tempt those who choose to dawdle a while at Camping Les Dondaines.

It’ll take you a measly half-hour to drive to either port from here, making it a smashing spot for a stopover pre- or post-Channel hop. Got a few more days to spare? If you’ve not done Dunkirk you should certainly see those sights, and there are also games of golf to play, sandy beaches to frolic on and loads of eats and drinks to sample at local restaurants and markets.

There are lovely things to eat on site too, as long as you give the owners a bit of notice: meals from the snack bar can be packed up to take away or served up on the scenic canalside terrace, where you can watch boats putter past while you munch. Chilled-out evenings around the campfire or barbie may be on the cards too; pick up provisions 10 minutes away in Watten or at Saint-Omer’s markets (20 minutes) for your alfresco feasts.

The vibe at this small site is a laidback and welcoming one, even for folks staying a single night; the owner’s received many ‘helpful’, ‘friendly’ and ‘lovely’ plaudits from past guests. He’s resisted the temptation to cram the site full of facilities, preferring instead to focus on the essentials (toilets, showers, washing-up area and wifi) and keeping the place peaceful.

Friendly, good value site with very friendly staff and level pitches.07/10/2019

Very peaceful site, the owner is exceptionally helpful and friendly, speaking far better English than my French, nothing is too much trouble.
Site is well sited next to a very interesting working canal, many historic WW2 sites nearby, and a Carafour and Netto supermarkets not too far. Can get fuel at any time of day with a credit card.
Pitches are well divided with hedges. Ours was a smaller pitch, and cosy, but we had no problem siting our large caravan and large 4x4 car at all, but would not have managed without motor-movers. Other pitches are bigger though, but our pitch suited us perfectly.
Water very hot in showers and wash-basins.
Good value for money, and open when many French campsites are closed at this time of year (October).

    Disliked:

Nothing at all. Considering most French campsites are closed this time of year, it suited us perfectly

Site very quiet, canal running along front of site which was lovely, John the owner was very nice, friendly and helpful, each pitch had a nice hedge around it for privacy, lots of hot water for the shower and pots.

    Disliked:

Shower and toilet block badly needed updating, John the owner was honest about this and he told us as soon as we got there it did, the toilet was clean, the shower tray and walls clean too, lots of lovely hot water, but only one shower and two toilets this was ok when we were there as there was only us and another couple there as it was the end of the season, we just stayed for the one night on the way home.

Hi, we arrived later than planned after a Euro tunnel delay, however once we had introduced ourselves we were given a guided tour to our pitch and location of the washrooms which are kept very clean . We quickly set up our van awning within our pitch which was surrounded by hedge on three sides, a great plus when trying to restrict the movements of a Weimaraner who had been in the car all-day!
The dogs were welcomed and we left early the next day after a quick dog walk down the canal track which is just outside the camping.
A great stopover site, especially with dogs, and the owner is very welcoming and security conscious.
    Thanks

Local attractions

Set forth for the seaside – it’s a 25-minute drive from the site to Grand-Fort-Philippe for strolls among the sand dunes, fishing from its harbour piers and nature walks in the Platier D’Oye Nature Reserve. If you’ve not been lucky with your wildlife sightings, you’re guaranteed to spot animals a few minutes further along at Fort-Mardyck zoo.

Dunkirk (25 minutes’ drive) is a place that cemented its role in history during World War II, and that piece of the past is suitably commemorated at the Dunkirk 1940 Museum; the museum tells the eye-opening story of the evacuation of more than 300,000 soldiers through exhibits, models and film reels. If you need a bit of quiet contemplation after that, head over the road to the contemporary art museum or leave the town behind to paddle a boat through the peaceful Audomarois marshes 15 minutes away.

You’re only 30 kilometres from the Belgian border here too, so you can zip over there in half an hour or so to feast on waffles and beer or take the kids to popular Plopsaland amusement park.
