Craving a scenic lakeside setting? Camping du Lac de la Thésauque sits pretty on the banks of a lake of the same name, and certainly ticks that holiday box. It’s also less than 50 kilometres from Toulouse and the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Natural Regional Park for when you want to sightsee in the city or the countryside, and you’re not far from several outdoorsy options either. Back at base, watery adventurers will find their fun on the lake – intrepidly exploring its shoreline in a canoe might be the first option, and pitting your skills against the floating inflatable obstacle course the next, soon followed by swimming, fishing, and pedalo paddles. And when you’ve had your fill of lake-based action, hang about on the grassy restaurant terrace with a book and a beer, stretch out on the sun terrace that surrounds the outdoor pool or go for a leisurely stroll around the site. The rest of the park has been planned out to facilitate serene family stays, with the brightly coloured playground and the miniature golf course set scenically among grass and trees to allow adults plenty of pleasant space for lolling about or playing pétanque nearby while keeping an eye on their littlies. When famished, fuel yourself for more activity at the restaurant, where you can pick up snacks and local cuisine to enjoy out on the terrace, or take it away if you find a more handsome/private spot to dine.

Local attractions

Have a scenic hack around the locale from the horse riding centre two kilometres from base, then head over to La Domaine des Oiseaux nature park for long wanders punctuated by spectacular views and glimpses of birds and wildlife. For more adrenalised adventure, hook yourself up at the treetop adventure park 10 kilometres away, or head to La Source Wake Park to get to grips with wakeboarding, kneeboarding and waterskiing. When you fancy a more sedentary day out, several fab historic sites around Toulouse are within an easy drive. Saint-Sernin Basilica – the largest Romanesque church in Europe – dominates the city, and the pink marble façade of Place du Capitole is well worth a look see. Also while you’re here, visit the natural history exhibits at Muséum de Toulouse, or make for the theme park and space museum of Cité de l'Espace, just outside the city.
