- Friendly lakeside site with great views over the Arédien hills
- Swim, rent a pedal boat or fish for carp, trout, pike and roach
- Owned by a chef who creates menus for the restaurant
It’s generally a safe bet to imagine that you’ll find a fair amount of decent food on your travels in France, but sometimes it can be a bit of a hike to get to the best local spots. Not so at Camping de Montréal, where owner Hans also dons the chef’s hat and serves up all manner of tasty titbits to ravenous guests – settle in the restaurant for a splendidly long-drawn-out dinner, nibble snacks while you have a drink at the friendly bar, or just grab a takeaway and trot back to your own personal patch. Naturally, there’s also daily fresh bread available to buy on site.
And what of the times that you’re not eating? Well, it’s up to you. You could simply choose to find a suitable spot to stretch out and do some digesting – and there are plenty of such spots, with the added bonus of some rather fab views over the Lac de Montréal and to the Arédien hills behind. Perhaps you could muster up enough energy to cast a rod into the lake and attempt to entice some trout, roach, pike or carp to take a bite (fishing licences but they can be bought on site).
If you’re feeling rather more active (and/or wish to burn off a few calories ahead of the next feed), you could slip into the lake’s waters for a swim – a lifeguard keeps watch in the summer months so you can be sure it’s safe to fling yourself in, and there’s a lovely little beach for relaxing afterwards. Alternatively, stay on the surface by renting a pedalo, or seek out more swimming at the open-air pool. It’s not all about the water here, though – landlubbers can stick to dry land and bash a few balls around with a game of tennis, basketball or volleyball. Kids can also consider a bit of clambering over at the playground.
When it’s time to get up and about, it’ll take you 10 minutes or so to walk to the nearest village, Saint-Germain-les-Belles, where you can, should you need, acquire further foodage from the grocery store or bakery, or stop for an interim coffee and snack at the café-restaurant. Should further leg-stretching be on the agenda, the village’s tourist office provides free guides to some lovely local walks, including routes through the nearby Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

On the A20, take Exit 42 and follow directions for St. Germain-les-Belles. When approaching the village, start following signposts for Plan d'eau de Montréal.
The Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park is the place to go around here for all your rural ramblings. It’ll take you half an hour or so to drive over there, and there are heaps of activities to choose from. Walk to a waterfall, choose one of the themed discovery walks, rent mountain bikes or head to Eymoutiers to hire canoes or kayaks for trips on the Vienne river. The park’s also really well set up for geocachers and orienteering.
Around half an hour away is Reynou zoo park, where five kilometres of paths run through the 100-hectare site, giving you the chance to see all sorts of animals up close, including giraffes and lions, and admire the splendid setting in the grounds of a 19th-century château. For a château of a different variety, take the half-hour drive to Château de Châlucet, a medieval pile at the top of a hill (take some decent shoes for the hike up).
Also around half an hour’s drive from the site is the town of Limoges, famed for its porcelain production – you can still visit lots of porcelain shops here as well as seeing an ancient kiln next to the riverside path. There are also plenty of pleasant wanderings to be done in town as you amble through the botanic gardens or poke about in the historic quarter in search of half-timbered buildings and cobbled courtyards. The cathedral and adjacent Bishop's Gardens are worth a stop, too.
