General

  • In the grounds of an old renovated estate surrounded by woodland
  • By the banks of the Dordogne River
  • Pools, Jacuzzi, spa and kids' club

The peeps at family-friendly Camping le Soleil d'Oc say they've made one thing their mission: making sure guests have as great a time here as is humanly poss.

And not to take away from their efforts, but that's not too difficult in this Limousin locale, for Camping le Soleil d'Oc is in the town of Argentat between l'Auvergne and Perigord, in the grounds of an old renovated estate surrounded by vegetation and flowering woodland, and by the banks of the Dordogne River – très très bien indeed.

All is très bien activitywise on site too: try your hand at fishing in the river, or wield a paddle canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding directly from the site for a small fee. Or might you fancy the covered and heated waterpark, which comes complete with a Jacuzzi for serene soaks as well as a paddling pool for the kids...? An outdoor pool is to hand on site too.

Also at le Soleil d'Oc – oui, there's quite a bit more – is a spa for more serene hours, a games area, sports pitches, a pétanque area, ping pong tables and mini golf. An activity programme for all the family runs in summer as well as a kids' club to keep small sorts out of mischief.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The indoor swimming pool is open between 18/04 and 30/10.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

  • Liked:

    Spacious screened pitches for tents.
Lots of hot water and washing facilities

    Disliked:

Snack bar at restaurant prices with very limited choice of set menu.

Children's club was disappointing, one adult to 17 children on the day we were there. Choice of boules basketball or table tennis, not exactly suited to 5-12 years. Play area jaded and not very well maintained.

    Wifi expensive.

Local attractions

Options in the area around Camping le Soleil d'Oc include nature days, heritage days or just rambling around the local towns and villages.

One popular stop is the tiny and highly scenic clifftop village of Rocamadour, a place of pilgrimage for centuries and also famed for monkey forest La Forêt des Singes and its local cheese. If it's more French heritage you're after, you could also meander around the medieval town of Gramat, also a top spot on the medieval pilgrim trail (a weekly market is here these days too).

Also in the area, have a day out at the underground river and caves at Gouffre de Padirac (this one is a must); see the red sandstone village of Collonges-la-Rouge and the hilltop town of Turenne; visit the castles of Curemonte and the towns of Argentat, Beaulieu sur Dordogne and Brive la Gaillarde, or ramble in the ruins of the Tours de Merle.

Many local waterfalls are around to be marvelled at too.
