A tiptop tourist board rating and direct access to a massive Mediterranean beach 150 metres away… we're already saying Très bien about Camping Marisol (it's on the Catalan coast in the Pyrénées-Orientales's 'little corner of paradise', Torreilles, for starts). We'll get to what's in the region in a bit, for we think vraiment it will take you quite some time to get off site with the très très bien range of what's on offer… a huge and heated waterpark with heated pools, a 70-metre slide and a teeny pool with toys and fountains for the tiddlers, but also all manner of mollycoddling for those who reckon holidays should be all about relaxation, including a spa, beauty salon, Turkish bath and hairdresser. Pampering oneself among south of France sun? That's about as close to exemplaire as holidays get. Also on site are beaucoup choices for the active-minded in Camping Marisol's extensive sports and fitness programme with a pick of water aerobics, step, aqua zumba and a fitness trail for all levels, as well as a gym, the pools and regular tournaments in volleyball, football, basketball and pétanque… Et where are les enfants in all this? Out of your hair and having a screamingly good time at the Camping Marisol kids' club, that's where, which caters for all sizes from tots to teens with water games, face painting, sports tournaments, workshops and a whole heap more. From late afternoon – we did say it might take you a while to get off site – the entertainment laid on includes more discos, cabaret, quizzes and karaoke for folks of all ages. And regarding le cuisine? Camping Marisol has a traditional restaurant, L’oliü; a lounge restaurant, Ku De Ta; and a shop selling local produce, baguettes and pastries. Five restaurants are on the nearby beach to dish up Catalan cuisine – we did say this set-up was très très bien…

Local attractions

The beaucoup beautiful beach of Torreilles is one of the loveliest in the Languedoc-Rousillion and runs for two and a half miles of unspoilt sand backed by dunes, just the ticket for sunbathing, sandcastle making, nature spotting or cooling off with a swim or scuba dive. To the south, Argèles (Argèles-sur-Mer) is probably the best-known beach in Languedoc and the longest in the Pyrenées Orientales: make with a picnic for the northern end for Pyrenées views in front and a sweep of pine forest and grass behind. Take a stroll too around Juhègues's chapel, Louis Blasi Square and other heritage highlights in Torreilles town (and also see the iguana palace), or get more active in the area at local paintballing, waterskiing, canoeing, horse riding, sea fishing and miniature golf; it might not be quelle surprise to hear there are a few vineyards in the region too.
