General

  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes' cycle from Sainte-Marie
  • Huge waterpark with a swimming pool, waterslides and a paddling pool
  • 10 minutes' walk from the beach and 20 minutes drive from Perpignan

Cor, that waterpark’s a bit of a stunner, n’est-ce pas? (Oui, off you pop for a quick nosy at the pics.) This is not just any old pool, this is a 1500m² whopper with a 25-metre pool, a kids’ pool, diving board, waterslides, waterfalls and a water play area with geysers and fountains. And, given that it’s likely you’ll be settling in for a while, plenty of sun loungers all around for relaxed surveillance of the splashing.

And the best part is that all of this is mere steps from your pitch should you choose to stay at Camping le Sainte-Marie, on the Med coast 20 minutes’ drive from Perpignan. Fancy a change of scene from the pool? A beach, perchance? More than one flavour of shore awaits monsieur or madame’s choice – a wild stretch of dunes is a 10-minute walk away, or you can drive to a serviced beach in 10 minutes if you prefer your sand more manicured.

Or maybe you’d prefer simply to take it easy on site. No problem – large pitches all round mean there are plenty of sunny or shady little nooks ripe for stretching out with a book/a tablet/your daydreams.

Young’uns with less tolerance for leisurely lounging, meanwhile, can be packed off to the kids’ club for daily fun and frolics in the form of treasure hunts, crafts and games of volleyball or table tennis (high season only). Outside of activity time they can be jumping for joy on the bouncy castle and trampoline or making new furry friends by feeding the animals at the mini farm (goats, llamas and ponies are among those that will gladly accept your offerings).

During the summer season, the on-site restaurant-bar provides all sorts of sustenance for guests, from those who want a full-on dinner to those who require nothing more than a cocktail or chilled beer to sip by the pool. It’s also the hotspot for evening shenanigans, with various entertainment going on throughout the week: come armed with your party shoes for disco night and get ready to belt out your fave power ballad at the karaoke.

Other facilities include a mini market that provides essentials for the DIY chefs and has a most welcome supply of fresh bread and pastries for morning munching. Two toilet blocks take care of all your cleaning needs, including washing machines, washing-up areas and hot showers.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 30/04 and 17/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Excellent site, amazing water park/pool, lovely area. 07/09/2017

The park is well laid out with good camping facilities. There is a shop which, while a little pricey, is well stocked and has a good range of products, the bar/restaurant is well priced and offers good meals to eat in or take back to your pitch/caravan.

The water park and pool are excellent. We have 2 boys aged 11 and 8 and we spent lots of time between the pool and the water park, both are staffed and kept in check. The pool closes from 1pm to 2:30pm and once it re-opens in the afternoon it does get a lot busier. There are chairs and sunbeds in both but get taken up quickly once re-opened.

Overall this is a great site and we'd love to go back.

    Disliked:

The only downside about this site is the noise at night. We stayed for 7 nights and on 4 of those nights the noise from the entertainment started at around 9pm and went on until around midnight.I don't know if it's because of wind direction or line of sight from the stage but it was loud. It wasn't as if you could just hear muted thudding beats in the distance, we could hear every note and every word.
Thankfully the kids slept through it so we weren't too badly affected. This was really the only thing we didn't quite like about this site. Many families attended the entertainment (kids included) and so I guess aren't affected the same. If our kids stayed up later it wouldn't really be an issue.

Amazing with lots of free extras for the children. We found that children were kept busy with all the free stuff onsite. There is a huge bouncy castle, pump track for bikes and a mini golf course.
The site was clean and always seemed to being cleaned throughout the day. The pool was clean and lots to do too

    Disliked:

My only dislikes was the entertainment did go on till late (midnight) and was loud so if you didn't want to attend you felt like you were there at your own pitch! The pools are separated by a bridge so you were on the move to watch the kids and when the pool was busy you would struggle with sunbeds.

Staff were helpful. Toilet blocks are clean. Pool is great but see below. Restaurant was good and well run.

    Disliked:

Children were turned away from the pool for not wearing Lycra swimming trunks. They were wearing swimming costumes but just the wrong sort ! Pool opening times were quite limited. Pitches are compacted soil and the dust gets everywhere. The nightly entertainment pulsates across the site until 12 most nights. Didn't use the facilities as the kids hated the site and we went on day trips for the whole week.

From the manager...

Dear madam, dear sir,
we thank you for sharing the impressions of your stay and are sorry that you have not found in our camp what you expected.
In the pool, schedules are in effect: 10h-13h and 14h30-19h. The lunch break time also allows the campsite to be quiet and children to rest. About wearing the swimsuit we are subject to French regulations that can also offer you excellent quality bathing water without much added chemicals. The water is very clear and does not sting the eyes.
The campsite is shady, the sites are not grass all summer and can create some dust.
For animations are 5 in number 2 of which actually ends at midnight. Others rather about ending around 23:30. The sound is limited and at midnight camping with the calm. They are also required by vacationers but still limited compared to the Mediterranean coast.
However, we apologize that you have been disturbed. We are surprised that your children have not found happiness by free play areas proposed in the camp: water slides, trampolines, table tennis, cross court, water slides etc ...
We wish you a very good end of summer. With kind regards

Local attractions

An easy way to get around this area is by bike – if you’ve not brought your own you can hire from the site. Start by taking the 10-minute ride into the village of Sainte-Marie for shops, restaurants and the beach, and later on take one of the tourist office’s suggested circular routes to see some of the area. The well-marked routes range from six to 20 kilometres and are marked out on a map that you can acquire from the tourist office.

Another suggestion is to cycle over to the next resort, Canet-en-Roussillon, for more beach action and to make a circuit of the Etang de Canet Saint-Nazaire, a saltwater lagoon that’s now been designated a nature reserve.

If you prefer to do your exploring on four legs, you can gallop through the hills or along the beach from a riding stables in Sainte-Marie, or visit the Ferme aux Grandes Oreilles, a 15-minute-drive away, for donkey rides or just to meet the placid animals.

This stretch of coast is dotted with watersports centres, so you’ll just need to seek out the activity you fancy. Sainte-Marie itself has a scuba diving centre and lessons or rentals for windsurfing, sea kayaking and paddleboarding. For something with a bit more power, try jetskiing from Torreilles, 15 minutes away, or head up to Le Barcarès for wakeboarding and waterskiing.

Spare a day (at least) for a trip up to Perpignan, 20 minutes away by car – it’s a really rather handsome place with a mountainous backdrop and a gorgeous medieval Old Town that shows a lot of Spanish influence (the border is only about half an hour away). Places to visit include the huge Palace of the Kings of Mallorca, the Castillet tower (once part of the city walls) and the Romanesque Sculpture Centre.

If you prefer your history even older, head up into the hills above Perpignan to the Tautavel Prehistory Museum, 45 minutes from the site. Here you'll see all sorts fossilised bones and tools and a vast cave reproduction. The area's well known for its prehistoric finds – one of the oldest skulls in Europe was unearthed around here.
