Kids (and parents) are sorted at Camping La Presqu'ile in the Catalan region a short drive from Port Barcarès, as campers aged six to 11 are looked after every morning and afternoon in the kids' club. La hurrah! Are you possessed of an older offspring or do you rather fancy some on-site holiday activity too? Basketball, water polo and – naturellement – pétanque are among the many sporting activities offered here for adults and teens in July and August. Evenings are sorted too with events including dance, themed nights, karaoke, games, magic nights and a lot more – and watery times with a 200m² heated outdoor pool with paddling pool, waterslide and whirlpool to relax in. (And spectacular views too: the waterpark has vistas over the Pyrénées, the lake and Mont Canigou.) Facilities at Camping La Presqu'ile include a grocery shop, washing machines, a snack bar and the option to buy bread, cakes and newspapers (services may be limited during low season). The site added a playground in 2017.

Route directions

From the A9, take Exit 40 signposted Leucate. Continue on the D627 towards Port Leucate and then on the D83 for Barcarès. Take Exit 11 at the sign indicating La Presqu'île. Drive until the end of the dead end.

Local attractions

The family seaside resort of Port Barcarès is within walking distance of Camping La Presqu'ile and has varied events in all seasons, like the summer fishing festival as well as music concerts, folk music gigs and quite a whole heap more. Elsewhere, use the park as a base to discover Catalan country: to the north, Leucate Lake, the fortress of Salse, the Fitou and Rivesaltes vineyards; and to the south, the Côte Vermeille, the cultural heritage (and anchovies) of Collioure, the vineyard-covered coasts of Banyuls, and the maritime reserve Port Vendres with its old fishing port and the wild coves to the south. Very close to home, the 10-kilometre Greenway cycling trail and the 15-kilometre walking trail to Rivesaltes both pass the campsite gates, and you won't be far from local watersports like waterskiing, windsurfing, canoeing, sea kayaking and kitesurfing. If you want to get to Spain for a day trip, access via the Perthus pass is 50 kilometres away.
