  • Small and friendly site in the Cévennes
  • Hedges for privacy and shade
  • Pool, playground, bowling alley and restaurant with riverside terrace
Just look at all that green space. And how simple it is to sort a stay among it all: book a break at Camping L'Orée des Cévennes to be in a countryside and mountain setting in south central France, in a tiptop spot for folk who dig history, culture and heaps of outdoor days. The amiable team here say their site offers everything bigger ones do, but ‘without the associated disadvantages’: hedges and vegetation between pitches provide privacy and shade, and there’s no noisy entertainment or late nights at this peaceful place… just a small, friendly and quiet site in the handsome surrounds of the Cévennes. Outdoor days around the region are easily planned by turning up to the Sunday morning info session, where the site team shares tips on things to see and do nearby. There’s loads to pick from: Camping L'Orée des Cévennes is in the gorgeous Gard department under a kilometre from Saint-Jean-de-Valériscle, the scenic settlement at the confluence of the Ardèche and Lozere rivers. It’s niftily placed between the Cévennes National Park and the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park, in a land of mountains, hiking, fishing, wild swimming and villages for food shopping, festivals and events. The Pont du Gard is an hour’s drive from here and Mediterranean beaches within an hour and a half. Site facilities include a pool open in July and August, table tennis, a tennis court and a playground; guests also have access to a municipal bowling alley. The snack bar serves drinks and light bites on its riverside terrace and the site also has a communal gas barbecue.

Local attractions

You’ve figured out that there’s loads to do around here, oui? Get your planning chapeau on and start scheduling your itinerary, for you can be kept busy around these parts for months. Camping L'Orée des Cévennes is at the gateway to the Cévennes, at the crossroads of the Gard, Ardèche, Lozère and Camargue regions, all of which are stuffed with scenic landscapes, outdoor pursuits, medieval villages and Provençal-style village markets at the likes of Saint-Ambroix and La Grand Combe, 10 and 20 minutes’ drive away. Delve underground at caves including la Cocalière (15 minutes), Aven d'Orgnac and la Salamandre (both 35 minutes), or mosey around other ancient sites like the Pont du Gard (an hour) or the Maison Carrée Roman temple in Nîmes (55 minutes). Somewhat more modernly, castles to browse around are at Château de Montalet and Château d'Allègre, both 15 minutes away, and Château le Cheylard Aujac within 45. Anduze and Uzès are both within 45 minutes of the site (and both much recommended); for speedy sorts and petrolheads, the Pôle Mécanique Alès Cévennes motorsport race track is 20 minutes away.
