General

  • Lush and scenic setting alongside the Loue river in the French Jura
  • A short drive to the Chaux forest, Salins-les-Bains and Arc-et-Senans
  • Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming in the river

Set among an oh-so peaceful and verily verdant 17-hectare park in Ounans is the super family-friendly site of Camping de la Plage Blanche. This beaut and well-appointed park is bordered by the Loue river and lies right at the foot of the Jura mountains, a handy 20 kilometres from the handsome town of Dole in the Franche-Comté region, and within easy reach of historic attractions such as the Jura Vineyard and Wine Museum in Arbois, the UNESCO-listed salt mines in Salins-les-Bains, and the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans.

A heated outdoor pool, spa and kids’ paddling pool are among the meticulously maintained and modern facilities at Camping de la Plage Blanche, all surrounded by plenty of sun loungers alongside on the roomy sundeck. Kids have a play area with swings and slides, as well as heaps of room for running around and playing ball games like football, volleyball, handball and basketball at the park's spacious sports areas; and, like the playground, the ping pong tables and pétanque area are opposite the bar.

Further fun is on the cards too during July and August, when the site runs a packed family activities program for summer guests with pursuits such as crafting arches and arrows, hunting for treasure and playing games in the great outdoors. During the day all the fam can take part in beginners’ fishing courses, pony rides and sports tournaments, and in the evening magic shows, astronomy parties, open-air cinema nights and live music concerts are on hand to entertain.

More water-based antics can also be had in the river that flows peacefully by the site: have a swim or try your luck at catching fish, or if you’re up for an explore, head to the site entrance to find out about renting a canoe/kayak from the neighbouring watersports base, Val Nature-Loisirs Sportifs.

Foodwise, the snackbar and seasonal pizzeria restaurant (with bar and dance floor, open daily between 01 July and 31 August, and on weekends between 04 May and 30 June and 01 and 25 September) sorts your on-site eats, and in the morning you can be roused gently by the scent of freshly baked bread and croissants wafting its way through the park.

Pitches are level, staff super friendly, and the sanitary blocks well maintained. A free wifi service is available too.

    - We loved this site. Only stayed one night (overnight stop) but really wished we could have spent a few days here, it was so peaceful.
    - Large flat pitches, everyone seemed really friendly.
    - Very clean and modern sanitary blocks with comode style toilets, loo roll and soap provided
    - nice pool area, basic size/shape but pleasant and clean
    - Gorgeous river which you can paddle in
    - The friendliest staff ever
    - Lovely fresh bread & croissants in the morning, at a decent price
    - Bar/lounge area was beautifully made and furnished
    - Nice play area for kids, which looked new
    - Almost total silence late at night - a novelty in France and a welcome relief

    Disliked:

    - play area could have done with a couple of things for smaller children
    - an extra sanitary block is probably needed, we stayed right at the end of August so fairly quiet but there was usually a short queue for the toilets/showes

Excellent site with a nice pool but preferred the river to play in. 14/08/2016

This was a nice sized site big enough to have decent facilities but not big enough to become impersonal. The pool isn't very big but its more for younger kids as mine preferred the river to play in which was brilliant. The water was lovely and clean and not too cold either. The food in the café while not particularly cheap was very nice. The pitches where a good size which is good as we have a large tent. Staff where very good and seemed very keen to show off their English when asked a question in my best schoolboy French. The site is fairly central to the mountains to the south and the old towns of Dole, Besascon and Arbois.

    Disliked:

There was a lot of flies around - probably from the local farmland surrounding the site. We also had a lot of insect bites especially early evening. It was a little bit out of the mountains so next time visiting the area would probably go a bit further south..

Local attractions

As the site is set right next to the Loue river, you’re within very easy reach of easy riverside ambles, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and peaceful paddles and swims.

For woodland walks a little further afield, the Chaux forest lies 15 minutes’ drive from base and is crisscrossed by waymarked walking trails, cycle routes and bridlepaths – pack up a picnic and plan to spend a day here, because as France's second-largest woodland area, there's 20,000 hectares to roam around.

An easy 18 kilometres away is the town of Arbois, where you can explore the exhibits of the Jura Vineyard and Wine Museum in Château Pécauld; for pamper-themed days instead (and/or to visit its Romanesque church and the Great Saltworks UNESCO World Heritage Site), the spa town of Salins-les-Bains is 21 kilometres away.
