  • Waterpark, fishing pond, playground and summer activities

Mon(t) Dieu! Pitchup.com could fill un book or deux with all the things to see and do in France – and that’s before we even ask the French team for recommendations. If, like us, you do a great deal of dithering trying to decide where to go and what to see next in la France, let UNESCO and its World Heritage status sites suggest a destination on your behalf – and start near the top of the land with a visit to Mont Saint-Michel and its bay.

The abbey on this tiny island is one of the best-known sights in all of France (and was the inspiration for the design of Minas Tirith in the film Return of the King, Tolkien fans), so we’re not un whit surprised that Mont Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay see around three million visitors a year between them.

Cleverly, pitching up around the bay will also have you close to the coastline and World War II D-Day landing beaches of Lower Normandy – and if you pitch up at Camping Le Vieux Chêne in the peaceful Dol-de-Bretagne countryside, you’ll be a piffling 30 minutes’ drive from other fave French destinations at St-Malo, Dinard and Cancale. Très bon.

As befits a campsite of the bay, Camping Le Vieux Chêne is surrounded by lakes and comes with a waterpark and hydrojet benches, and a heated outdoor pool with waterslides and a paddling pool for the tiddlers. Guests can also cast off for carp at the park’s own fishing pond, or get a bit more active out of the water at the pétanque court, tennis court, well-equipped playground, games room with pool table and video games, mini golf and ping pong.

Activities are organised for all in peak season, including theme nights; et pour la cuisine, the bar/restaurant serves takeaways and grocery essentials are available at the site shop.
