General

  • Stay around famous Mont Saint-Michel and its bay
  • Close to the D-Day landing beaches and 30 minutes from Saint-Malo
  • Waterpark, fishing pond, playground and summer activities

Mon(t) Dieu! One could fill un book or deux with all the things to see and do in France – and that’s before one even goes far from the north coast. If you do a great deal of dithering trying to decide where to go and what to see next in la France, let UNESCO and its World Heritage status sites suggest a destination on your behalf – and start near the top of the land with a visit to Mont Saint-Michel and its bay.

The abbey on this tiny island is one of the best-known sights in all of France (and was the inspiration for the design of Minas Tirith in the film Return of the King, Tolkien fans): overall, Mont Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay see around three million visitors a year between them.

Cleverly, pitching up around the bay will also have you close to the coastline and World War II D-Day landing beaches of Lower Normandy – and if you pitch up at Camping Le Vieux Chêne in the peaceful Dol-de-Bretagne countryside, you’ll be a piffling 30 minutes’ drive from other fave French destinations at St-Malo, Dinard and Cancale. Très bon.

As befits a campsite of the bay, is surrounded by lakes and comes with a waterpark and hydrojet benches, and a heated outdoor pool with waterslides and a paddling pool for the tiddlers. Guests can also cast off for carp at the park’s own fishing pond, or get a bit more active out of the water at the pétanque court, tennis court, well-equipped playground, games room with pool table and video games, mini golf and ping pong.

Activities are organised for all in peak season, including theme nights; for cuisine, the bar/restaurant serves takeaways and grocery essentials are available at the site shop.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Nice pitches, location and environment. Very clean and friendly. This came up as non-electric hook-up but all pitches appear to have electric hook-up.

    Disliked:

Distinct lack of hot water and pressure. Also didn't like the plastic shower cubicles. A good shower is one of the most important things for us so spoiled an otherwise very nice site.

    Couldn't find wifi!

Excellent pool, very good ablution blocks, well stocked shop, good pizza and friendly staff. Very close to Mont St Michel, our destination the next day.

    Disliked:

Pitch was on a slight slope (fine for us as we were in a camper van so had chicks but being in a tent would have been interesting. Although we didn't make use of it I noticed that the bar/restaurant had a stated closing time of 2200 but the staff were locking up at 2130 and by 2140 it was all locked up. Whilst Wifi was available it was too slow.

Local attractions

One could fill a book or two with all the things to see and do in beautiful Brittany too – and that’s just sticking to the cities (and la cuisine; Brittany lands 80 per cent of France’s seafood catch).

Have a day each in Saint-Malo, Cancale and Dinan, all reachable within a 30-minute drive of Vieux Chêne and all with their own flavour. Saint-Malo is the most visited area in Bretagne; walk the ancient city walls here on the west side of la citadelle and take a trip to Le Grand Aquarium before an afternoon/evening in one of the Saint-Malo seafood restaurants.

See food also at Cancale, known for centuries for its oysters; get sand between your toes at the four beaches of Dinard, part of Brittany’s world-famed Emerald Coast; and at Dinan, tramp the cobbled streets among the old half-timbered houses of the medieval town.

Rennes, Brittany’s capital, is about an hour south from the site: go here on a Saturday for its huge outdoor market and cider and galettes from the local farmers’ stalls.

Mont St-Michel Bay sees plenty of sailors and hikers looking for active options on or near the water, but most visitors to the bay come to take a guided tour across its sands at low tide – up to 19 miles of sand can be exposed here when the water recedes – and to seal and bird spot on the beaches and on the island of Tombelaine. To see a bit more scenery, horse riding and microlight flights are available around and over the bay.

Within the countryside surrounds of Camping Le Vieux Chêne, guests also have the option of days out go-karting, golfing and bowling or being amused at Cobac Park; a wealth of other entertainment at Brittany festivals, pubs and clubs will never be too far away.
