General

  • Set around a 17th-century converted farmhouse 10 minutes from Bayeux
  • Half an hour's drive from the D-Day landing beaches
  • Pick fruit from the site trees for free

All manner of holiday delights are on offer around this manor – with beaches, châteaux, outdoor activities and famed historical attractions (in the form of the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landing beaches) all close at hand, this is a mighty strategic spot to settle in for a bit of Normandy pottering.

And it’s not just the surrounds that are most excellent at Manoir de L' Abbaye – the place itself is pretty special, too. 10 minutes’ drive from Bayeux is this pretty traditional 17th-century former farmhouse, now set up to welcome guests to a peaceful rural retreat. Come armed with a bottle to crack open after dark, as it’s most likely you’ll be wanting to spend a bit of time sitting out gazing up into the sky as the stars come out (fingers crossed for negligible cloud cover).

If you need something to nibble as you meander around the estate, the friendly folks on site are happy for you to pluck fresh fruit from their trees, and they’ll also have fresh bread and croissants ready for your brekkie in the mornings. More substantial feeding needs can be catered for at the supermarkets, shops and restaurants in Bayeux; feel free to bring your wares back to site for a barbie if you fancy an alfresco grilling sesh.

Also on site are a play area for the tots and (naturellement) a pétanque court for those très traditional games à la français.

Situated in a small hamlet in a rural area, the campsite is split into 3 areas separated by what presumably were the abbey garden's walls. This gives it the feeling of being uncrowded even if it were full. The site is generally fairly level but some pitches would require ramps. The electric hookups are not standard 3 pin, so require an adaptor for the usual French mains sockets.
The facilities, situated in a pleasant courtyard, are best described as rustic (which is not such a bad thing)! 5 showers and 5 toilets, dish-washing sinks and a laundry room.
On arrival, you will be escorted to reception by a very friendly jack russell terrier! Take your French phrase book as the friendly owner does speak a word of English.

Everything. Yvette gsve us a fruendly welcome and directed us to the campsite / orchard entrance. We pitched our tent amongst apple and plum trees. The fruit was PYO. No light or noise pollution. Plenty of stargazing. We will be returning next year.

Quite, peaceful atmosphere with clean facilities and well maintained and separated pitches.

Slightly surprised at the additional 10 Euro coast for the use of the laundry facilities!!!
Thought I had booked and paid for a stay with electric hook up inclusive, however still had to pay an additional 8 Euro on arrival.

Local village has no shop or bar facilities, so bring what you need for the 1st night unless you have additional transport.

Local attractions

Bayeux, 10 minutes away, is quite rightly famed for its medieval tapestry (getting on for a hefty 70 metres long); also in town are a couple of good museums including the splendid Musée Baron Gerard.

It’s also worth heading over to Caen, 20 minutes away, to visit the medieval Abbaye-aux-Hommes and the castle commissioned by William the Conqueror. More recent history are commemorated in the form of museums, cemeteries and monuments at the D-Day landing beaches around Arromanches-les-Bains and Omaha Beach, around half an hour away.

For a bit of fresh air, there are some fab walking trails and watersports (including canoeing and windsurfing) in the Marais du Cotenin Regional Natural Park. Or pack up your bucket and spade and make for the sandy beaches of Asnelles or Courseulles-sur-Mer, both around 20 minutes away.
