  • Family-friendly Auvergne site just outside Saint-Germain-l’Herm
  • In the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park; an hour from Puy-de-Dôme
  • Swimming pool, trampoline, zipline, hot tub and restaurant
Anyone pining for a foray into the forest will be pleased with the pine-filled surrounds of Camping Le Saint-Eloy. This little gem of an Auvergne site, a few minutes’ amble from Saint-Germain-l’Herm, looks out onto the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, with plenty of local options for woodland walks and other countryside antics. Beyond that there’s plenty more to keep the family busy: an animal park, château, adventure park, botanic gardens, volcano ventures and scenic train rides are all within a 45-minute drive. Nevertheless, it’s possible that there may be days when you don’t even make it beyond the site’s gates, given the range of tempting activities set up right there. Settle on a sun lounger for a leisurely day by the pool; it’s likely the kids will manage to find something to amuse them between the paddling pool, the playground, the trampoline and the summer activities. Pangs of jealousy? Fret not – adults aren’t left out of the active times. Games of pétanque, table tennis and volleyball await by day, as does the rather addictive ride on the 50-metre zipline. Bubbling away in the hot tub is another (recommended) option ahead of summer nights filled with theme meals, karaoke and suchlike. No need even to head out in search of food, for there’s a restaurant and bar on site (although it’s worth noting that if you do want to venture forth, you’re just a few minutes’ walk from a supermarket, bakery and couple of restaurants).

Local attractions

Got a taste for that zipline? Take it to the next level at the Forêt Aventure Cunlhat adventure park (20 minutes’ drive), where you can leap from tree to tree on a series of ziplines, rope walkways and nets. Back down at ground level, it’s worth hiring mountain bikes on site to take out for local rides; it’s a little hilly around here so they’ve invested in some e-bikes to give you that little extra push up the slopes. Hilly is in fact a bit of an understatement, as you’ll note when you see the sizeable Puy-de-Dôme volcano, an hour away. Learn about its origins at the excellent Vulcania park or just sit back and let the train propel you up towards the summit. More leisurely train action can be had with a scenic ride on the Agrivap tourist train from Ambert (half an hour). Other options for days out might include the Parc Animalier d’Auvergne (45 minutes away), Château de Mons (half an hour) and Un Jardin pour la Terre (half an hour), a botanic garden that’s gathered plants from all corners of the world into its themed areas.

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site. Big pitch. Near village with all amenities. Lovely pool. Little cafe. Nice owners.

Disliked: Unfortunately we picked village fete weekend and blaring disco for Saturday and Sunday nights till 4 am! Don’t go this weekend in august as happens every year! However not campsite fault! Some pitches sloping.
