The tallest sand dune in Europe… you want to take a look at that, non? And viewing such a vision is easily done for those that forge a path to Domaine de La Forge, a spacious Gironde site 10 minutes' drive from La Teste-de-Buch. Impressive as the huge Dune du Pilat is, it's not wildly welcoming for sunbathing, so it's handy to note that the site is also within easy reach of Arcachon's beaches. If it's a tad more activity you had in mind, a waterpark, a zoo and a couple of golf courses are also nearby. Back at base, the site has 19 hectares of forest to potter around, with a fitness trail and an outdoor gym area for folk who fancy a workout among the trees. A volleyball court, tennis courts, multisports pitch and miniature golf provide more options for a bit of gentle (or otherwise) competition. A highlight for many guests though is the splendid waterpark: the two heated pools (one round, one rectangular for the serious length-counters) are flanked by slides, an island, a lagoon and a Jacuzzi area. In summer, a restaurant-pizzeria opens up just next to the pool for eats with minimal disruption to watery proceedings. Entertainment including music nights and foodie evenings runs in high season. If you fear losing the kids to the aquatic area for all time, entice them out by pointing out the playgrounds, the kids' and teens' club activities, or the chance to coo over cute ponies and goats at the mini farm.

Local attractions

So, that dune: that's the Dune du Pilat, 20 minutes' drive away. Its vital statistics are indeed impressive: 2.7 kilometres long, 500 metres wide and up to 110 metres tall. You can clamber up its soft sides if you're feeling strong-legged, but many suggest that trotting up the wooden staircase is preferable. What goes up must, of course, come down – if you're not rolling or running, you can swoosh down on a bodyboard. For a more traditional beach day, take the 20-minute drive to Arcachon, which has a fab seven kilometres of sand. Those seeking watersports should take the half-hour drive to Étang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet, a huge freshwater lake with sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and canoeing as well as trails for biking or horse riding. If you're in search of a kid-friendly day out, the big beasts at Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon (10 minutes’ drive) may well prove popular. Those on tiddler-free travels might like to consider a round at either of the golf courses within 15 minutes, or a round of top tipples in Bordeaux (50 minutes).

Liked: Nous avons beaucoup apprécié la configuration du mobile-home( les 2 chambres avaient leur salle bain WC) Le mobil-home était bien entretenu et propre. Le cadre était agréable. Nous n’avons pas pu profiter de la piscine du fait qu’il faisait assez frais mais en plein été ce doit être plaisant avec accès au toboggan. L’accueil était chaleureux et les explications claires. Je recommande vivement.

Disliked: Ce n’est pas une critique mais simplement un constat. Le domaine est tellement immense que je me suis trompée de rue en rentrant le soir et j’ai eu le plaisir de tourner dans une partie des rues avant de retrouver mon emplacement (j’avais oublié le plan dans le mobil-home)

Liked: La limpieza, el bungalow muy grande y el detalle de bien venida. La piscina.

Disliked: La hora de entrada me resulta demasiado tarde, hay que esperar hasta las 15 h. Es muy grande, es difícil para los niños encontrar con quién jugar
