  • In a woodland area five kilometres from the beach
  • Pool, paddling pool, playground, snack bar and 12 communal barbecues
  • Summer entertainment including archery, discos and oyster sales
Fred and Matt surely have stuff sorted at friendly and active Camping des Familles. For not only is this Grayan-et-l'Hôpital and Gironde region site well set for peace and greenery all around as well as beaches a few minutes' drive away, it's packed with activities from archery to oyster tasting all summer long. This eventful site is between Gurp beach five kilometres away in one direction and the spectacular Gironde estuary, the biggest in Europe, within 25 minutes' drive on the other. Hire a bike on a daily or weekly rate to explore the lush landscapes nearby and des Familles's two woodland hectares, or opt for on-site times instead among the plentiful facilities and amiable vibe. Summer events include drawing contests every Thursday, fresh oysters for sale on Tuesday evenings and themed evening meals such as paella or mussels and chips every Wednesday. Wednesday's also the evening to try your hand at pétanque in the weekly tournament; on Friday evenings, test your archery skills with an introductory session (a small fee applies). Thursdays are the nights for the site disco, hosted by resident DJ David. Leisurely options for all ages are at everyone's disposal too: the site also has a playground, a heated outdoor pool with slides, paddling pool and sun loungers alongside, and a pétanque court handily set near the dozen guest barbecues so you can perfect your technique while sizzling up the sausages. If you say pffft to cooking while on hol, stroll along to the snack bar in summer for pizza and other tasty bits to eat in or take away, as well as bread and pastry orders for next morning's breakfast. A shop selling beach essentials is also to hand, along with two amenities blocks with baby bath facilities, and a laundry room open all day for guests' use.

Liked: Fantastic site with a lovely pool area. The bar/restaurant serves meals above and beyond the usual snack bar food. Specials nights included sardines, gambas, roast ham. The site is well maintained and all those working there are welcoming. Would definately recommend.
