Camping Maisonneuve: Sunbathe by the pool

General

  • Peaceful, family-run Dordogne campsite
  • Set in 26 acres of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin
  • On-site bar and pizzeria, outdoor pool and fishing lake

You'll feel right at home at Camping Maisonneuve, a peaceful, friendly and family-run Dordogne site in the Périgord Vert within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park.

The site spreads over 26 acres of green scenery, with plenty of space for all, a private fishing lake, and woodland and riverside walks. A village shop, bar, bakery and restaurant are all in the small village of St Jory de Chalais five minutes' walk away. A swimming lake with beach is within 15 kilometres' drive.

Amicable and helpful owners Lorna and Russ haven't stopped there with their tiptop facilities and amenities: Maisonneuve also has an outdoor pool, a play area, free wifi, and a fully licensed bar and pizzeria. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

This pretty place is just the ticket for a roomy and peaceful getaway, or to use as a base for getting out into all on offer around the Dordogne. At just four kilometres from the N21, it's also a most handy stopover for travellers on their way to southern France, Spain and Portugal – but when you see what's on offer here, you'll likely want to stay at least another few days…

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Good site, clean facilities, great pool, needed more info on arrival23/08/2022

Swimming pool was lovely, bar area was very good, pitch size was huge, rural setting, close proximity to local shop and not far from a local supermarket, shower block was good, cleaned regularly, had a big fridge in shower block you could put items in and freeze items, washing machine and dryer too (3 Euro charge).

Owner (Russ) was very pleasant and helpful

They had a Paella night with live music which I believe was very good after speaking to others, didn't attend as we were out until late that day.

Most pitches have good tree cover to help with the blazing sun when we were there in August

Make sure you have an extra long power cable and extra long water hook up as electric and water points can be some distance from some pitches

    Disliked:

WIFI was non existent throughout the site except at the bar area. 4G reception is quite good elsewhere

Nobody at reception to welcome you until 6pm, sign just saying find your own pitch

Booked fully serviced but no pitches available with water at them or even nearby, went round and round the site 4 times with car and caravan in 40 degree heat but could not find any with water nearby, had to settle for one without water, but it was ridiculously uneven, moved to another facing the cow field, had great views.

Other people with tents had water pitches but not using it, I suspect they just turned up and found the best pitch and camped there whether it had water or not. Noticed some pitches were reserved however we did not have an option to reserve a particular pitch when booking. Owner kindly waived the local tax fee as we had paid for water on tap but didn't have it.

Bar area inundated with wasps even when no food being served during the day when using WIFI.

Food was nice, freshly cooked but very limited option, few starters and a couple of desserts and Pizza's, no chips etc.

They had a BBQ night while we were there but when asked about it told it was fully booked up, no info around site about it so did not know.

No info about the site on arrival, could do with a simple site map showing pitches with water and/or booklet with info inc local attractions etc.

No monitoring of the pool at all, kids running amok while we were there, I'm all for kids having fun, adults too, but one day someone brought the biggest inflatable I have ever seen in the pool, taking up nearly half of it, kids jumping from the side and bouncing of it, one kid got hurt while I was there, I suppose the owners would expect the parents to monitor any 'extreme' fun.

Local attractions

The spectacular Dordogne, with its splendid landscapes and scenery, prehistoric and ancient sites, jaw-dropping châteaux and deep dark caves, is a rightly popular place in France for visitors from within the country and all over the world. And then – mais oui – there's the cuisine: make sure to make room for Dordogne duck and goose, truffles, cheese, Bergerac and Monbazillac wines…

For outdoorsy days/attempts to burn off laden heaps of Dordogne eats, a swimming lake (and beach) are 15 kilometres away at Grand Étang de Saint Saud; many kilometres of cycle trails are nearby, and canoes can be hired to explore the Dronne, Vézère and Dordogne rivers.

The Camping Maisonneuve owners also particularly recommend the splendid subterranean experience of Villars Cave, 14 kilometres from base, as well as the spectacular châteaux at Puyguilhem (15 kilometres) and Hautefort (30 kilometres).

Within day trip distance are the World War II memorial and museum at Oradour-sur-Glane; the cathedral and Roman remains of Périgueux, and the fab medieval centre of Limoges, all within 45 kilometres. Bergerac and Sarlat are both 75 kilometres away.
