  • Spacious 15,000-square-metre site on the outskirts of Ilhabela town
  • Tours, excursions and activities can be arranged by reception staff
  • Two swimming pools, restaurant and summertime adventure park on site
Roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is a place for a proper escape from either city: gorgeous Ilhabela, a place whose beaches, waterfalls and tropical trails have certainly earned it the moniker of ‘beautiful island’. Venture a couple of kilometres from the ferry port (and shops and restaurants) of Ilhabela main town and you’ll hit Velinn Camping Ilhabela, an independently-owned dog-friendly site in a particularly pretty spot. The grounds here are certainly spectacular, stretching out to 15,000 square metres of gardens packed with trees and flowers and with a river running down to a waterfall. At the centre of it all is a mansion that’s almost 150 years old and now houses the site reception. Throughout the summer months, guests have access to the on-site Ilha da Aventura Eco Parque, which has treetop trails, ziplines, a climbing wall and a covered play area (plus a poolside snack bar where grownups can chill out while their offspring tackle all of the above…) Facilities available on site in all seasons include massages, a playground and two open-air pools filled with fresh water. Eats are easy to sort here: you can either cook at the shared kitchen area (which has a stove and fridges), get grilling at the barbecue and picnic area, pick up snacks at the kiosk or settle in for a meal at the restaurant, which also does breakfast. Pitches have power points and lighting, and there’s access to a bathroom block with hot showers. Reception staff are on hand 24 hours a day to help guests with things like luggage storage or tour reservations, and they’re also a handy fount of knowledge for tips on things to do and places to eat.

Local attractions

To start your trip you’ll be given a map of all the choicest spots on the island, with tips on how to get to them. The island has bikes to borrow, and there are also trails to trek, boat trips, and jeep or four wheel drive outings to get you out to the parts that are trickier to reach. There’s plenty to see, too: the island has 40 fab beaches and a huge 300 mapped waterfalls (some of which require a sense of adventure to get to them…) Snorkelling spots include the marine protected area and sunken statues at Julião, Portinho and Cabras Island, and there are dozens of shipwrecks around for scuba divers. This is an island that’s packed with activity, as well: have a chat with site staff to sort days of kitesurfing, paddleboarding, canoeing, mountain biking, guided treks, paintballing and the like. All a bit too much? Hang around in Ilhabela town for cafés, bars and ice cream shops.
