  • Well-maintained peaceful site five minutes' drive from Krujë
  • Less than an hour's drive from Tirana
  • Eco-friendly site with veg gardens and chickens
A castle, an ancient bazaar, a pretty medieval centre to meander through, and a mere hour’s journey from Tirana – it’s no wonder a goodly number of folks cruise up to Krujë for a day trip. Settle in for a stay at Kruje Camping and you’ll be able to do rather more than just scrape the surface of this lovely little town, and you’ll be in a nifty location for exploring more of north-east Albania as well – sandwiched as you are between mountain-filled national park and craggy coastline. On top of that, this peaceful rural site is a rather fine place for a spot of relaxing – pitches are pleasingly spacious, and there are plenty of shaded spots for snoozes among the natural collection of trees and plants that populates the gardens. Take a wander around the grounds and you’ll note that this eco-friendly place also has its own veg gardens and keeps chickens. A small playground is on site to entertain the small sorts; there’s also plenty of space for games of football and volleyball, which often kick off through the summer months. Barbecue dinners are organised on occasion through high season; picnic tables are dotted around the place for alfresco meals at other times. Supplies are a five-minute drive away in Krujë’s town centre, as are plenty of options for eating out.

Local attractions

There’s a lot of Albanian pride in Krujë – this is the birthplace of national hero Skanderbeg, after all, and one of the first things you come across in town is likely to be is his huge sword-wielding statue. Beyond that are the ruins of the castle, where you can take a tour or wander through the gardens. The gorgeous views from here are particularly stunning around sunset. Within the castle walls are a couple of museums: the Skanderbeg Museum (worth a visit to see more huge statues and murals) and the excellent National Ethnographic Museum, set up inside a 19th-century Ottoman house. If you like what you see, head out to the Ottoman-style Old Bazaar to pick up traditional crafts and other pretty bits and bobs. Away from the town, it’s around a half-hour drive to the 2,000-hectare Shtam Pass National Park for a day of hiking, or an hour to the Bovilla reservoir for lakeside walks and some fab corners for rock climbing. Heading in the other direction, it’s about 45 minutes to the Adriatic coastline.
