  • Spacious and peaceful site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye
Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they’ll all be beaming from ear to ear at Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye. If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a supremely suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area: thanks to a winning combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms, you can emerge from the hills looking tidy and clean enough for a literary luncheon or a dapper dinner in town. (If you prefer your dining alfresco, barbecues are allowed on site.) With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: What a fantastic hidden away site. Totally exceeded our expectations. Everything was immaculate from the pitches which are spacious to the toilet and shower block. Beautiful walks in the manicured fields with marked out pitches and the lovely orchards with apple plum and cherry trees. Excellent dog walking facilities with loads of bins. Thank you to Brian and Tracey and the team who couldn't have been more welcoming. Will definitely visit again. 20 minute walk to the village along quiet road and possible to walk to Hay on Wye which we didn't do on this occasion but will definitely do next time. Thank you from Sue, David and Yanto xx

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Hi Sue & David I don't think I've ever seen someone so excited to try out their new motorhome, as David was, it was a pleasure to have you on park. Hopefully you'll come back and see us when the park is in full bloom, it is stunning and well worth another visit. Take care. Kind regards Allan, Tracy and the Borders team

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Lovely clean site, facilities excellent and spotlessly clean. Beautiful views. As the weather had been very wet it was a bit difficult getting the caravan on to the pitch luckily we didn’t need help but the owners were very helpful.

Disliked: Bit difficult to get on the pitch as quite tight

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked: Everything! - the managers were incredibly welcoming and nothing was too much for them. - the facilities are well taken care of, so much time and care is taken to ensure communal areas look their best. - great area, really well placed, either 5 minutes drive to Hay-on-Wye, or an hours walk. Countless things to do in the area!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The pitch (#18) position, the play park, the toilet/shower block, the grounds. Friendliness. Clyro is a nice village to be near. And a stove throw from Hay and the river Wye.

Disliked: Noticed that a few of the pitches were quite tricky to get onto for less experienced towers, although the site manager was always very helpful if anyone struggled! Pitches not hugely level, be prepared to level out with chocks and blocks/planks when pitching up.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi We are glad you had a nice time with us, the extreme amount of rain did hamper getting on and off the pitches, and we are looking into widening the road to help people getting on and off easier. Kind regards Allan, Tracy and the Borders team

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries. If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury, 10 minutes' drive away, to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire. If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Beacons’ highest mountain, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes). To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping. Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.
