General

  • Off-grid site next to the Dyfnant forest, 20 miles from Welshpool
  • An hour's drive from the beaches of Barmouth and Tywyn
  • Direct access to walking trails and fishing on the Twrch river

Wonderful it is indeed at this west Wales site, with rural views all around and the stunning views of Snowdonia and Barmouth beach within an hour’s drive.

And wilderness it is indeed too, for this is an off-grid site that’s reached by driving along a four-mile winding country road from the nearest village, little Llangadfan. Negotiate that drive and the rewards shall be yours: days spent walking in the neighbouring Dyfnant forest or fishing on the Twrch river, and evenings spent cwtched (as the Welsh might say) round the campfire while gazing up into the dark skies.

This is a place to disconnect and embrace nature, and so facilities have been kept deliberately low-key, but you’ll have access to a compost toilet and a hot-water shower. If you’d like to sizzle some sausages you’ll need to pack a barbecue and remember to stop off at a supermarket en route (the nearest sizeable ones are 20 miles away in Welshpool).

It’s entirely possible that you’ll want to spend your whole stay in perfect rural retreat, but if you’re looking to get back out into the wider world, the folks on site recommend watersports at Lake Vyrnwy, mountain biking at Coed y Brenin or a ride on one of the area’s three steam railways. They’ll even volunteer to dog-sit for guests who’d like a day out at canine-free Powis Castle.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Local attractions

There are heaps of footpaths running through and from the site, but if your walking boots yearn for more, take them on the half-hour car journey to the Snowdonia National Park, where miles and miles await among the mountains and lakes. Should you prefer pedal power, take a mountain bike to Coed y Brenin – the UK’s largest dedicated mountain bike trail centre is around 45 minutes away by car.

If it’s aquatic antics you seek, bring a fishing licence to try your luck for salmon and trout in the river by the site, or take yourselves over to Lake Vyrnwy, half an hour away, for sailing, canoeing and kayaking. There’s an RSPB reserve over here too if you’re a twitching type.

For more leisurely days, head to Welshpool, 40 minutes away, to visit medieval Powis Castle and take a ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. Or make a break for the coast and the sandy beaches of Barmouth, Aberdyfi or Tywyn, all of which are about an hour away.
