General

  • Rural and back to nature site in southern Snowdonia
  • Spectacular views of the Dovey Estuary and the hills of mid-Wales
  • Near Cader Idris and the golden beaches of Aberdovey and Borth/Ynyslas

Sitting pretty at the southernmost point of Snowdonia National Park, there’s really s’no escaping the back to nature goodness of Gwerniago Campsite, also a working farm.

Whether you want a splendid location, a cracking public house or a good old-fashioned field where you can light your own off-ground campfire (and buy the wood you need on site too), pitching up at Gwerniago will tick plenty of boxes.

Cycling, river walks and an array of outdoorsy activities will entertain around the Dyfi Valley, but the real winners at Gwerniago Campsite are the youngsters (although big kids should enjoy getting stuck in just as much). The Cool Camping Kids book voted the site one of the top five in the country when it comes to things to see and do for kids: from rides on Sophie the pony and chances to help feed the lambs in season, to the wooded play area complete with tree swing, this place is fit for any little explorer.

Strollers and avid hikers alike will be in their element at these rural digs, as will twitchers; the farm is close to the RSPB’s Ynyshir reserve home of the BBC’s Springwatch in past years. Grab your binoculars to spot red kites overhead and keep a beady eye out for the Dyfi osprey nest which you can spy from the site.

As well as the clean and modern facilities on site, which include a shower and toilet block with solar-provided hot water (backed up by electric), new wooden footboards and nifty timed lighting to keep in line with the site’s eco-friendly policies, other touches added by the Welsh-speaking farming family owners to make your stay even more comfortable include free access to a small kitchen with a fridge freezer, washing-up sinks and a phone charger point.

The farm is within walking distance of Pennal village for those who fancy a posh bite at the local hotel's Michelin restaurant.

Location, rural and convenient. Cleanliness, facilities regularly cleaned to a high standard. Great site for kids, they loved the wooded nature play area. Wifi worked very well too.

    Disliked:

Crowded - very crowded for the late May bank holiday week. Despite reserving a pitch several weeks in advance, it was very crowded and only spot we could find was on a small plateau cut into the embankment of a hill (which didn't fit our tent)
Per sex there are only 2 toilets (no male urinals), 2 hand basins, 2 showers, and then 3 wash-up sinks - so resulted in long queues all week! Waiting for the loo is not pleasant. I think they clearly oversold the campsite this week, and/or need to expand the facilities block.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. The late May bank holiday week is one of our busiest weeks of the season. We were busy but did not feel that we were over crowded. We think the main problem was that you had booked to come on a Sunday when most people had arrived on the Friday and Saturday which resulted in limited choice of pitches. However some campers would argue that you pitched on one of the best pitches on site. We would advise that campers that can only arrive on Bank holiday Sunday should consider booking with sites that allocate specific pitches and not sites like ours that let customers chose their own pitch/space.

We have six toilets, ten wash basins and six showers available for customer use. We acknowledge that during Bank Holiday weekends and main school holidays our facilities are in demand as I'm sure they are at other campsites.

Everything was perfect, althought Gwerniago is a working farm it was extremely well kept. The pitches were flat and the grass was kept short.
The purpose built solar powered barn that housed the showers/toilet/washing up facilities were always spotless and probably the best I've ever used.
The surrounding country side was beautiful and listening to the Cuckoos and woodpeckers in the early hours was a memory I will not forget.
We will definitely return soon 10/10

We have stayed on many camping sites over the years and this one must rate as one of the best. The views are spectacular, the toilets and showers are always kept clean and tidy. The site owners are friendly and welcoming and give you information about the area on arrival. The site its self is clean and tidy. You can have a campfire which just adds that extra special touch. The fresh free range eggs on sale make a great breakfast. We will certainly be going back to this site.

Directions

If travelling from north Wales via Dolgellau, cross the road by Dovey Bridge and take the Aberdovey Road (A493). The campsite is two miles from the bridge, signposted on the left, and then the first farm on the right.

If travelling from Shrewbury/Welshpool, turn right by the clock in Machynlleth, then immediately left over the bridge. The campsite is on the left two miles up the road. If travelling from the south via Aberystwyth, drive straight through Machynlleth, over the bridge, immediately left and as above.

Local attractions

The site is set on the edge of the historic village of Pennal (just shy of a mile away), where there's a small shop, post office, café, and a pub hailed by the trusty Good Pub Guide friends, stocked with Welsh ales for your sampling and national specialities for foodies.

Four miles to the east is the medieval town of Machynlleth for the local street market on Wednesdays and getting techy at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Aberystwyth is about a 40-minute drive south for shops, restaurants and nights out.

If you’d rather escape the towns, explore the award-winning beaches and harbours (15 minutes away) for fishing and strolling. The Aberdyfi estuary’s beaches and sand dunes are some of the best kept in the country, and for those who fancy a round (of golf, that is), the area is also home to an award-winning golf course. For kitesurfers and boarders, beaches at Tywyn, Borth and Fairbourne (the furthest of which is 10 miles away) should offer some exciting sporting opportunities, with some even offering tuition.

Mountain bikers will find the Welsh ale beckoning after a day out on the wheels. Steeper terrain makes for challenging routes for the more experienced cyclist, but there are family-friendly routes available too.

If you prefer to take more laidback modes of transport, take a trip to Talyllyn’s steam railway (around eight miles away) or travel from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge on the Vale of Rheidol steam railway line.

And if all that, plus the plentiful helping of fresh air, still doesn’t have the kids beckoning for an early night, the leisure centre at Bro Ddyfi, about a 15-minute drive east, has a swimming pool and flume that should do the trick.

Must see

  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (2.1 miles)
  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (7.9 miles)
  • Vale of Rheidol Railway (Aberystwyth) (14.2 miles)
