  • Adult-only pitches in a wild area of a working farm near Cemmaes
  • Wildlife haven: look out for buzzards, newts, toads and otters
  • Wild swimming allowed in the lake; beaches half an hour's drive away
Hankering after some time hanging out with some proper wildlife? Pitch up at Powys site Gwalia Farm and you’ll be sharing the place with dragonflies, frogs, newts, buzzards, glow worms, and even the occasional otter. Tread carefully around the spacious pitches field or pick a spot by the lake – either way, you stand a good chance of spotting some of these beasts around these parts (and as it’s an adults-only site there aren’t any excitable kids to scare them off either…) And if you like your animal sightings to be completely guaranteed? This is a working farm, so just take a stroll around and you’ll encounter resident goats, sheep and chickens; there’s also a sizeable organic veg plot to cast an eye over if you’re into such things. Being a site that aims to disturb the local ecosystem as little as possible, the facilities here are kept low-key; the team have flattened some parts of the field for easy pitching and installed a compost loo and a sink, and there’s access to treated spring water in the next field. Itching for a hot shower? Ask in advance at the farmhouse and they’ll sort that for a small extra charge. If you’re not fazed by chillier water you’re welcome to take a dip in the lake instead (careful how you go, though – it’s a wild lake, and there’s no safety kit). Campfire cookery is a fine plan if you’re spending an evening in; pick up supplies at the shops and market 15 minutes’ drive away in Machynlleth. Not up for that? A pub is five minutes’ drive away in Cemmaes.

Route directions

From Cemmaes, turn up the hill (left if travelling west, right if travelling east). Don't turn off towards Brynmeirig/Treehouses but continue up the hill. At the top, the road takes a sharp right, goes down a steep hill and then turns sharp left. Just past Troed-y-Ffordd, Gwalia is the next property – look for a yellow farmhouse. There is a sign on the entrance to the camping field, on the left past the house; pitch where you like, then drop by the house to say hello.

Local attractions

Warm up with a wander around the farm, then get out for lengthier walks – the Cambrian Way, Dyfi Valley Way and Glyndŵr's Way long-distance paths all run past the farm, and there are tons of trails to follow in the Snowdonia National Park, about 15 minutes’ drive away. Keen to get closer to some of the big birds you’ve spied on site? Sign up for a session at Falconry Experience Wales, 20 minutes’ drive away. And if you’re inspired to create a nature sanctuary of your own, or just pick up tips on how to make your life a little more eco-friendly? Pay a visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology (20 minutes’ drive). Follow the Dyfi Valley west a little further and you’ll eventually hit the coast, around half an hour’s drive from the farm. Coast path walks are a fine plan if you’ve still got energy to spare; if you’re more in the mood to sit for a bit, aim for the beaches at Borth or Aberdyfi (both about 35 minutes from the site).
