General

  • Spectacular scenery site in the Berwyn mountain foothills
  • Private access to a bluebell and badger wood
  • Breakfast baskets, backpack and hamper picnics and arrival suppers

Obviously we can't absolutely guarantee it. But we can strongly suggest you'll have the best night's sleep you've had in yonks among the serene silence of Wales's Wyldwood Retreat on the Welsh border...

This peaceful place is set in an exceedingly silent part of land among the foothills of the Berwyn mountain range and looking down onto a scenic secluded valley with views of Gyrn Moelfre. It's highly popular with those who like to tire themselves out walking, biking or shopping among its surrounds, and is right on the Welsh border eight miles from Oswestry and 25 from both Shrewsbury and Chester.

Campfires are allowed, but if you feel that cooking on hol is a bit of a faff, breakfast baskets, backpack and hamper picnics and arrival suppers sourced when possible from the owners' veg garden are all available for a small fee; please enquire on arrival. (But do light the fire later too Wyldwood is in proper stargazing land.)

By day, there's a three and a half acre organic garden to wander on site – also very peaceful – leading onto a privately accessed Woodland Trust forest brimming with badgers and bluebells.

We had a lovely stay for 2 nights at Wyldwoods Eco Retreat. We were greeted by Tony and Jasper the dog as soon as we arrived and shown to our cabin. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed including a well equipped kitchen. We had our own private garden where we enjoyed the afternoon sun gazing across the valley. The chimenea kept us cosy and warm outside in the evening. Tony and Dawn were very welcoming and always happy to help with anything we needed. Thank you for a great stay! Scott & Sarah

Our stay here was fantastic right from the start. The owners Dawn and Tony are very welcoming and helpful, showed us around the lodge and the surrounding garden and told us we was more than welcome to use the guest bathroom in the house for shower/bath facilities as the eco shower was not yet complete. With no internet, phone signal or anything to do with technology it gave us time as a family to re-connect and enjoy each others company again. The garden is lovely for walks leading onto the forest and being able to sit outside while looking out over the gorgeous views was pure bliss. The cabin was close enough that we could put our 1 year old to bed and keep an eye on him whilst we relaxed around the outside wood burning area giving us time as a couple to relax.

We loved everything about wyldwood retreat! A really beauty spot! The cabin was beautifully decorated! So clean, cosy & well equipped! The scenery was perfect! The owners Dawn & Tony were wonderful! Super friendly & kind! They're Readily available if you need them but otherwise just leave you to it & respect your privacy! The cabin is private with its own private garden! We found goodies in the cabin upon arrival! Mmmm The organic flapjacks were amazing!! I've experienced many glamping/cabin holidays around the uk & this really is the best by far! I really can't fault it & highly recommend a visit!! It's the perfect peaceful getaway!! - Peaceful, private & relaxing!! The gardens & woodland attached to the property are beautiful & great to explore! Even in the rain! & Lots of wildlife to enjoy!! There was even fresh flowers & scented candles in the cabin! As well as a log fire!! So very much attention to detail!!! These owners clearly care about customer experience!! Which is why I would rate it higher than any other glamping/cabin holiday I've experienced in the uk!! I recommend it so much I'm going back in 2 weeks time!!!! Can't wait!!!🤗❤️

Relaxing cabin in the welsh countryside 04/05/2016

The log fire and outdoor kitchen area was lovely. Very peaceful and the owners are happy to help. The shower wasn't ready but you can use the one in the house and there's a shared compost toilet outside just a short walk away from the cabin.

    Disliked:

It could do with more solar lighting or candles inside as when the sun sets it's very dark inside although this would be less of an issue in summer.

From the manager...

Thank-you for response, it is useful to have negative points raised, we have now bought a couple of bright table lamps. thanks

Wonderfully peaceful break, cosy lodge, lovely hosts 17/04/2016

We loved being completely off the grid for a couple of days. We connected more as a family and had a truly wonderful time. My 9year old son commented on how peaceful it was and he wanted to stay forever! Considering he slept in until 10.45 one morning (longest ever lie in!) I'd have to agree! The lodge was so cosy we didn't ever feel cold and it had everything you could need for your stay.
We instantly warmed to Dawn and Tony and we knew they were there if we needed them but they weren't intrusive at all and let us get on with our break. The shower for the lodge wasn't ready yet so we used the one in the house but that was no problem at all and was a lovely, super powerful shower.
All in all, this was an absolutely perfect break and we'd definitely love to come back.
(I've scored WiFi top marks because there wasn't any and this was ideal to force us to switch off from the technical world for a couple of days.)

    Disliked:

The only slight negative point I'd make is the main bed was a little hard. We put the extra duvet down underneath us and this helped..maybe another mattress topper would solve the problem.

Pretty much everything! The couple who own the site are very welcoming and helpful, ensuring you have everything you need for a comfortable stay! The lodge itself is very cosy, especially once the log burner has been lit!
The Nearest town (Oswestry) is only £15 e/w in a taxi if like us you decide to go out to explore the nightlife.
overall I would highly recommend this site if you are looking for a peaceful getaway and a good nights sleep.

    Disliked:

If I was to be picky: the site wasn't sign posted as 'wyldwood eco retreat' but if you follow the directions it's relatively straight forward to find.
The shower for the studio lodge had not yet been completed which meant if you wanted a shower you had to use the one in the house. This wasn't a problem by any means, the owners were very accommodating however I still felt like a nuisance asking to take a shower.
Don't let these minor critiques put you off for what is a fantastic stay!

Local attractions

Wyldwood Retreat is in a premier location for hill walking, gentle ambling, cycling, bird and badger watching, or delving into the many historic local sites. If you fancy horse riding, one and two-hour hacks are available at the nearby equestrian centre.

Prefer some history? The site is ten minutes' drive from Sycharth, the home of Owain Glyndŵr (the last native Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales). Chirk and Powys castles with their gardens are within easy reach.

A 45-minute drive via spectacular scenery takes you to Lake Vrynwy, with its pumphouse, sculpture trail, dam and museum. Walk or take a narrow boat trip over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain and a World Heritage Site.

The sandy beaches, clean seas and mountain views of the north Wales coast are within a 90-minute drive: the Wyldwood Retreat team particularly recommends Harlech and Barmouth for golden sands and more Welsh heritage.

Closer to home, the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant is five miles away and has food shops, a post office, a traditional butcher's, a restaurant, a fish and chip gaff and some friendly pubs. And a waterfall: Llanrhaeadr (Tan-y-Pistyll) Waterfall at 240 feet high is the highest in Wales and what the town is mainly famed for.

Also have a hike around ye olde market town of Oswestry, for its hill fort, many markets, Park Hall Farm and around 30 pubs, and around Shrewsbury and Chester, both 25 miles away from your sleepy base.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (13.9 miles)
  • Chester Castle (27.1 miles)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (27.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Chirk Castle (8.2 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (25.6 miles)
