General

  • Quiet adults-only riverside site in Crickhowell town in the Usk Valley
  • Between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Excellently maintained amenities including powerful hot showers

Peaceful times in Powys for adults only, along with spectacular valley views, a river setting, outdoor pursuits galore, and amenities so sparkling that the shower here has been lauded as 'the best I've ever had on a campsite' by a grateful former guest… it's a cert that you should meander along to Riverside Caravan Park.

Taken over by new owners in 2017, Riverside is within walking distance of the handsome small town of Crickhowell, on the banks of the River Usk between the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Black Mountains.

It's a place to firmly plonk yourself down at for many an outdoor activity – hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, hang gliding, paragliding, climbing, watersports and river fishing are all around – or to settle serenely down for a heritage or festival trip to the many attractions, monuments and market towns within easy reach. Friendly local pubs, speciality shops and restaurants are within a five-minute walk.

Riverside's spankingly up to date amenities include a laundry room, a washing-up area and a new shower/ toilet block added in 2017, with private washrooms, underfloor heating and free hot showers.

This is one of the best sites we have ever been to. The new shower block is excellent and the site is extremely well maintained and professionally run with friendly and efficient service. The location is fabulous, with great walks and the delightful town of Crickhowell right on the doorstep. For dog owners, the site, town and walks are all very dog-friendly.

Dogs of leads. Why do dog owners think that rules don't apply to them. There are signs everywhere saying dogs must be on a lead at all times, yet half the dogs on the site were not on leads. Some were sniffing around other caravans and doing their business too and the owners were not even aware of where they were or what they were doing.

From the manager...

When people visit Riverside Caravan Park, they are not just visiting a caravan site but our home and family. We hope people respect this. We are very strict on all site rules. We make people aware when they arrive on site that if they have a dog it must kept on a lead at all times and not to exercise the dog in the caravan site. This is one of the site rules:

Dogs to be kept on a lead at all time and not exercised on site. No fouling on site and if there is an accident please clean up after your dog (poop bags provided in reception).

If this, or any other site rule is broken we will be asking the person responsible to leave the premises as stated in the rules:

Authority of the conduct of the site is vested in site owner, who is responsible for the smooth running of the site and the welfare of its occupants, in this connection, the owner is empowered to refuse entry to, or the use of the site by any person and should he consider it necessary to request the removal of any caravan/motorhome/tent. The refund of the appropriate portion of any site rental shall be sufficient discharge of all obligations to any person who is required to vacate the site.

From the manager...

Please note - We do advertise that we have wifi throughout our site. We do offer free use of wifi in reception where the signal and performance of the wifi is strong and fast. We like to think when people visit Riverside they can relax, have a digital detox, talk to people, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and listen to the birds sing!

Pretty much everything. Excellent facilities and a perfect base for exploring/walking the area around Crickhowell. A busy, popular and peaceful site which the majority of people respected.

    Disliked:

People often used the extremes of their area to pitch onto so they could get their caravan/awning/car squeezed into a neat row which made it a bit claustrophobic to be honest. The pitches are not overly large but Probably conform to the required standard.

From the manager...

Please, next time can you park correctly on your pitch as instructed before you setup your awning. If you are unsure, then please ask or we will require you to take down your awning and park correctly on the pitch. All of our pitches are marked out to the correct distance for safety regulations.

Local attractions

Crickhowell and its surrounds are popular Powys bases for outdoor adventurers, who come to hike, mountain bike or climb the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, take to the skies paragliding and hang gliding, or cast off for plump brown trout in the Usk river.

Cycling and walking trails for all ages are in the area too, such as the Crug Hywel or Table Mountain path a mile from Riverside, rising up for 451 metres above sea level to Crug Hywel's flat top and extensive Iron Age Celtic fort. Another excellent wander is alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal four miles away (you can of course take a canal trip out onto the water as well).

The history of Wales as the world's biggest producer of iron and coal is told at the acclaimed Blaenavon World Heritage Centre six or so miles away, centred around the quarries, coal and ore mines, workers' homes and furnaces of Blaenavon Ironworks. A visitor centre, museum, gallery and regular events and exhibitions delve into the full tale.

Also around to see is the market town of Abergavenny (six miles), a pick-up point for the region's long-distance trails of the Marches Way, the Beacons Way and the Usk Valley Walk, all passing through the town. The bookshops and castle of Hay-on-Wye are about 20 miles away, and Cardiff within 40.

Must see

  • Blaenavon Ironworks (6.0 miles)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (6.2 miles)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (6.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Skenfrith Castle (14.9 miles)
  • The Kymin (19.6 miles)
