General

  • Small family-run farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Miles of hill, countryside and mountain walks all around
  • Just outside the village of Felindre

Hay you! Up for a wander in the Brecon Beacons? Fancy hoofing it around Hay Forest, going off-a to Offa’s Dyke, traversing the Taff Trail – and staying with friendly folk on a farm with views and sunsets that will make your eyes water? Walk this way…

Newcourt Farm Campsite is the place to peel off your socks pitchside once you’re on your last legs: this small family-run farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Brecon Beacons National Park is used by wise wayfarers as a base for hiking the hills, mountains and countryside around it.

Gliding, horse-riding, fishing, golf and watersports are also available nearby; if you’re too puffed out to even think about any of that, this is a stellar spot for stargazing too.

The farm has clean showers, loos and a washing up area. Supervised school trips and groups such as Duke of Edinburgh Award seekers are welcome, and the site is dog-friendly.

For fuel, Newcourt Farm Campsite is just outside the village of Felindre, to pick up pub grub at the dog- and child-friendly Three Horseshoes pub.

We went there during bank holiday weekend with a plan to walk on Brecon Beacons. We arrived late, but could still take a nice few hour walk to nearby hills.

Camp has clean facilities, and not many showers, but surprisingly they didn't get very busy.
It is very peaceful at night. You can see the stars, even Milky Way. We haven't seen any mosquitoes or biting insects.

There were quite a few friendly dogs visiting.

    Disliked:

There's a bit of an incline (where we were, not everywhere), so we kept moving during the night.

Beautiful part of the world, really easy to get to and well worth the travel.
The facilities were clean and well kept with plenty of access to water. It was very safe and the children could go to the toilet block on their own.
We stayed over the August bank holiday, it was busy, as we expected, but the campers were all pleasant and tidy.
When silence falls on the campsite at night the sounds you hear of animals are awesome, and with very little light pollution the stars twinkle bright.

    Disliked:

It was very cold at night but reality is you are in the Brecons and high up. So take plenty of layers.

Friendly welcome. Amazing views. Clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

Lack of loos, only three loos and one shower for entire campsite. It's just not enough to cope with the numbers. Queue for the shower was 30/40 minutes. Same with washing up sinks, big queues form as only two hot water sinks available.

Nearly the whole site is on a slope.

The views were beautiful and the location perfect for a family weekend getaway. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The kids had so much fun picking blackberries on site. Great that there were toilets nearby each pitch site and plenty of leaflets available on things to do and places to eat locally.

    Disliked:

There was only one Shower available for ladies and one Shower available to men. There were queues each day for use of the showers.
Washing facilities for plates/cutlery was good however the hot water was nothing more than a trickle and extremely hot.
Showers were at a cost of 50p (I didn't mind the charge but it could have been advertised that they came at a price).
Paying the remaining balance at the site was "cash only" again not a problem but it could of been advertised or sent in the email along with confirmation.

I liked the stunning view from the place we had our tent up:-) Amazing! Campsite was very clean and well maintained, owners were very friendly. Close to short walks in the woods and not far from Black hill makes this campsite a perfect spot for weekend away:-)

    Disliked:

As we stayed close to the washing area there was some noise but after 10 pm lights were off and we had a perfect silence:-)
    More showers would be nice.

Local attractions

Your boots will be made for walking: this corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park has footpaths and trails all around to warm you up before tackling the hill walks and mountains, and all in a spectacular part of Wales with diverse scenery including valleys, waterfalls, caves and open countryside.

There are a couple of walks direct from Newcourt and two long-distance trails cross through the farm: the Offa’s Dyke Path on the eastern border of the national park and the Taff Trail running south from Brecon. The Brecon Beacons Park Society has a full programme of guided walks in the park from moderate to strenuous, and there are many routes and maps available from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (or just ask Newcourt Farm owner David to point you in the right direction).

The national park’s also where you can get your fill of climbing, birdwatching, caving, canoeing, sailing and other outdoor options; there’s a visitor centre six miles from Brecon with all the info you might need as well as courses and events like pottery workshops and navigation training. The park also has several Sustrans routes for cyclists as well cycle hire and cycle tour guide companies; mountain bikers have five mountain bike centres and 14 trails from yellow (level one) to ‘killer black’ (bring plasters). Wheels on tour can cycle the Lôn Las Cymru, the route from Cardiff to Holyhead via Brecon (use route 42).

Ten minutes’ drive from Newcourt Farm Campsite will take you to the Black Mountains for even more stellar views, paragliding, mountain boarding, hang gliding and horse riding; another long-distance walk, the 218-mile Marches Way, passes through the area. Or take to the water instead for boat and canoe trips on the Wye or the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

After all that, we hereby give you permission to curl up with a book: buy your tomes at the town of books, Hay-on-Wye, about half an hour from Brecon. Hungry after reading? Have some of the lovely local lamb or pick up some organic farm veg around the area.
